I upgraded from a 2017 Macbook Pro 13 nTb to the 16' i9 Macbook Pro and it's amazing. It's so much faster and going from 2 to 8 cores is a huge performance improvement. I'm in college majoring in CS and Stats so I need the size of the display for coding. I feel like the weight doesn't make a huge difference to me. It's just an extra water bottle. However, this semester I mostly have math classes and I don't use my Macbook much. I got an iPad Pro 12.9 with an apple pencil and a keyboard folio and I feel that is adequate enough for all the light tasks like note-taking and watching videos in general. I like my Macbook Pro more though. The speakers, keyboard, and display makes it a clear winner for me when I have heavier projects to do.

The 14.1” could be your ideal laptop, so I’d wait.

I wanted a dedicated GPU and larger screen than 13” however, and the 16” performs well. But if I had the option of a 14.1” with “Magic” keyboard and 16”-like speakers I might just have swung for it.

That rumour suggested mini LED was a bit of a way off yet, so I wonder if we'll see a 13" revision with scissor keys, or a 14" revision with scissor keys, then mini LED on both at the end of the year or maybe even Q1 next year?

My only concern would be availability - given the current health issue. Due to Conornavirus, the supply chain is severely impacted and we may see delays in new products rolling out.

MBP16,1 was initially 2-3+ weeks for BTO configs. MP7,1 (shipping from USA > USA) was up to 12 weeks (if ordering with wheels). It was assumed these were volume delays. Add in component shortages or issues with short staff at assembly and you're looking at some kind of additional delay.

FWIW, Apple said "coming soon" for the W5700X GPU option for MP7,1 in December (at launch). We're approaching the end of Q1 2020 and it's still not available. This is either being held up by component availability, issues importing into the USA, or Apple is stockpiling until AMD 5XXX drivers are addressed.

I know the 16 is a beast, but is it really that significant? It's like a pound and a quarter difference.

Does anyone use it for business/law/etc? Everything is tailored to developers and creatives, but my company is all Apple and I can't see how the extra real estate would be bad for drafting/reading/etc.

If all you're doing is content consumption, have a look at the MacBook Air. Not only is it cheaper, but it's dead silent and always cool to the touch. Also the battery life is fantastic!

The Air feels like a much more modern computer to me than my previous 13" Pro. The latter was always warm (and often hot) and the fans were spinning up without much load.

The size and weight difference between the Air and Pro is arguably not much these days, but it's noticeable.

EDIT: That said, the 16" MBP for $1950 sounds like a really good deal?

actually, turns out the air is “not cool to the touch“ inter heavy loads and the base model 2020, is way under powered. The 2018 iPad pro runs circles over the air as it’s proven to be way more powerful
