15" is too small to be used on the lap for 8 hours a day.

Where do you get the idea the 17" is too big, when you owned a 17" notebook was it an Apple or one of the Windows units? You have owned a 17" Apple Macbook Pro. Used one for an extensive amount of time, haven't you, or are you just expressing an opinion of others as the opinion of yourself?

If Apple made a laptop the same size as say a Hewlett Packard 17" Pavillion, it would have a 20" screen.

PHYSICAL SIZE: Apple 17" Macbook Pro = Any Other Brand 15"

When I bought my 17" MBP I wanted a nice carrying case. Not finding a 17" case I liked I found the 17" MBP actually fit extremely well in a 15" notebook case. Even fits in the 15" Notebook Pocket of my Camera Backpack.

One of the biggest drawback to the 17" MBP is the price, but many will use size as reason they do not own one.

Low End 15" $1799
Low End 17" $2499

$700 is a lot of money one could use in other ways. But as one who uses a notebook as his primary computer on his lap, and on his desk I can tell you $700 is a small premium to pay for what the 17" brings you.

NOTE: Initially I bought a 15" ( $2199 ) but returned it after realizing I made a mistake and bought the 17" ( $2799 ).

i have owned more than one 17 mbp. i have been thinking about getting another one. i was in best buy with a co-worker and he mentioned wow the 17 looks too big and akward.

Sitting next to an Apple 13" and a 15" it might " appear " to be too big and awkward, but ask Best Buy if you can remove it from the Apple display area and place it alongside the other brands.

In the end you are buying it for yourself, and you need to buy it to fill your needs and not those of your co-worker.

I am sitting here on the sofa, 17" MBP in my lap and wondering how any adult, in reality can consider it too big. I said 'adult' because a child or small adult might find it a bit awkward.

In contrast across the room there is a 17" ASUS Notebook being repaired and man that 17" ASUS Notebook is too big and awkward, but the Apple 17" Macbook Pro is the perfect size.

Congrats to Apple for putting a 17" Display in a 15" package.

If anyone thinks the Apple 17" is " too heavy ", go check out the 17" ASUS ... what a boat anchor that thing is.

Maybe tomorrow I will come back to this thread and post photos of the ASUS 17" and Apple 17" MBP side by side, end to end for comparison. Also comparisons of the boxes as well.

Nothing speaks louder that photographs, a picture is worth a thousand words.

For me, if price weren't a factor, I would absolutely go with the 17".

While for some, I believe that it could be considered too big -- I don't think it's fair to say that one size fits all in portable computing -- I am a man-sized visual artist and 15" is a concession. The OS I want at a size I can afford.

I had a 13" mb and currently have a 15" mbp. I prefer the 15" display. I have used the 17" mbp, but don't like the size of the machine (not as portable).

imo notebook = portability

17" is too bulky, 13" is too amateur (specs wise)

what do you think about people who think 17 is too big to be a notebook? look at MVRL post

Like I said .... IF Apples 17" footprint was a big as all other 17" notebooks I would agree with them. I too used to carry around, first a 15" Powerbook and then a 15" Macbook Pro. But at that time my preconceived notion that a 17" being too big was biased from experience in my pre-Apple era.

However I have come to realize that when compared to all other offerings the 17" Macbook Pro is no larger than most 15" notebooks.

Now my question to you is this .......

What do you think about people who say the 13" is " too amateur " ?

See MVRL post! :D

Let's compare some other Notebooks to Apple. I wil list them from smallest to largest.

ASUS 15" 14.9" X 10.6"
APPLE 17" 15.5"X 10.5"
ASUS 17" 16.5 X 12.8"

Width wise Apple 17" is slightly more than 1/2" wider than ASUS 15" , yet Apple's 17" is a full one inch smaller than the ASUS in width and 2.3" in smaller in depth.

The biggest numerical difference when comparing all specifications I can see where the Apple 17" is " too big " would be in the pricing.

One real irony in the pricing is that Apple has DROPPED the price of comparable 17" Noteooks.

TODAY --- 2.4 Ghz CPU / 17" Antiglare Screen $2549
( $2499 + $50 ( Anti-Glare )

PREVIOUS ----- 2.3 Ghz CPU / 17" Antiglare $2799
( $2499 + $250 ( CPU Upgrade ) + $50 ( Anti-Glare )

15 or 17, I say. 15" is slightly more portable, but 17" will give you a LOT more screen space. The jump is less stark going from a 1680x1050 screen instead of a 1440x900 screen, yes, but I still find 1440x900 more than satisfactory myself. For me, it was slightly a cost thing (barely manageable to get the 17, though I could have done it technically) but mostly the fact that I've had to use a machine on desks that would barely fit a 10-inch netbook. (That's more of a failure on the desk designers' part, but... good lord, that thing couldn't even fit a piece of paper on it comfortably.)

Honestly, should money and working space size not be an issue... go for a 17", by any means. I can't see how it could be too heavy (I had a Toshiba 17" for a while, and even that wasn't too heavy or too uncomfortable in my lap), let alone the 15". I often have to check my bag to make sure it's still there when I head out somewhere, because I don't feel weighed down by it at all.

guys i must say im a OS X newbie and i purchased a 2011 13 inch macbook pro.....i was able to use a 15 inch 2008 macbook pro..... and to this day i want to get one and sale my 13 inch.... 15 is the golden spot especially for such a nice OS
