So after speaking to the guy at the shop he's decided to go with a new Blackberry. Not sure why I bother! Anyway thanks for the suggestions and comments.

For seniors the large clear display & big tiles on the Windows phone work very well.

I bought a Lumia to try, then gave it to an 81 yr old family member. Much to my surprise he had very little problems learning it.

After one week I'm getting both texts & emails from him. A delightful result from what I expected to be a very daunting task.

I'm going to go against the grain here and say that Android would be the better option.

This is simply because Android supports widgets, so you could set up the phone in such a way so that everything he needs is on the home screen. Somebody earlier mentioned that the settings menu is difficult to navigate, but you can just create shortcuts to the settings that he needs (wifi etc). Even without widgets, there are usually shortcuts to the common toggle options such as wifi/bluetooth/mobile network/etc on/off in the notification bar. He wouldn't have to remember where everything is in the menus like he would with iOS.

You could also add something like a scrollable bookmark widget to a home screen so that everything is right there, ready to be clicked on.

You can change the font and font size in Android too, if eye sight is a factor.

My mum is a technophobe and I gave her my old HTC Desire. She gets along with it just fine. :)

Any phone out there right now is so easy to use. I am really sorry but you have to be extremely dumb if you are unable to operate android. Its not rocket science come on man!

I use both ios and android and they are equally easy to use for me. Wanna put an app on an iphone? Go to itunes, search, download, sync, bam you got it. Wanna put an app on your android phone. Go to google play, search, press ok, bam you got it. Wanna make a phone call? Press the phone icon.

Seriously how hard can it be.
