Thanks guys. Any thought s on the Lacie rugged? The Iomega seems to be getting some good feedback, but the idea of it getting too hot to handle does not sound good. Hmmmmmm... still not sure Lacie or Iomega, decisions, decisions.

I use one at work and it's great and very durable. A bit bulky though.

Thanks I will not purchase that one

I'm looking for a portable 1tb+ firewire 800 drive to use with my mid-2010 MacBook Pro i5. The 500gb Western Digital one I have is getting too small. This isn't just for backups, it's for using live so I'm thinking FW is the way to go. The problem though is finding a 1tb+ FW drive at a good price it seems. I know the 1tb+ USB 3.0 drives are $80ish.

i have a friend who uses the lacie and has been through 3 in a short time period. not sure if this is a reflection of the entire line or not but i wouldnt recommend it

I don't know about Iomega but I've got 3 Rugged drives from Lacie and love them. What I like is first FW, and second is that I can throw them around without much fear of damaging them.
What I don't like is that there is only 1 FW port so you can't chain another drive to them, you have to chain them to another one.
The fact that they're rather bulky doesn't bother me.

I've also got a G-drive mobile (http://www.g-technology.eu/g-drive-mobile.php) and it's nice too. Not rugged in any way though, and the max capacity available is 750GB.

I second getting a WD, but if you're set on portable get a Passport. No need for USB 3.0 unless you plan on upgrading to a Windows machine that supports it any time soon. Take a look at the USB 2.0 one here and the faster Firewire 800 one here. Your other option is to buy one of these and put it in one of these.

If I wanted to do a 1tb FW800 external drive, The option of the Western Digital 1 TB Scorpio Blue SATA II 5400 RPM 8 MB Cache 2.5-Inch Bulk/OEM Notebook Hard Drive - WD10JPVT ($130) put in the OWC On-The-Go Pro
0GB Triple Interface Portable Case Kit
($70) comes out to $200 total.

How would that compare with either:

http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/on-the-go ($165)

or
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/EliteALmini/eSATA_FW800_FW400_USB ($168 for the 1tb or $249 for the 1.5TB (which I think is too pricey for now) ?

I've heard good things about the G-Technology 1TB G-RAID mini Portable Hard Drive Array but it's like $100 more.

On a related note, in a couple months when I replace my 2010 2.4ghz MBP i5's optical drive with an SSD, I'm thinking of replacing the 320gb Hard drive with the 1tb Western Digital Scorpio Blue I linked above.
