@cosmichobo: My only feedback is that I find the scanner on my multifunction Brother to be quite useful. You'll still have a great laser, but it's nicer to have a scanner at times as well.
The laser doesn't have a scanner, but the inkjet does, and they will likely be sitting next to each other, so - all good. :)

It's done. Finally. o_O

AND

I couldn't decide on just one (!) - so I bought a Brother mono laser for b&w printing ($118), and a compact Canon multi-function inkjet for photos / colour documents ($79).

By splitting the printing between the two devices, I am hoping that I'll get the economy of the laser, but still have colour printing when we need it.

Both have wifi printing, so the devices wont have to sit on my desk any more like the old one did.

The laser was the 2nd cheapest on Officeworks' website, but had good reviews. With approx 1,000 pages per toner ($70), and 10,000 pages per drum ($120) - I expect before the drum needs replacing, we'll probably be ready to upgrade anyway.

As for the inkjet, it was the cheapest multifunction Canon I could find with multi-colour cartridges and wifi printing. I know Canon isn't necessarily a great brand - but Apple's association with the brand 30 years ago still makes me have faith...

And the final bonus... as we can no longer put e-waste out for curbside rubbish collection, I was able to take my old Canon to Officeworks, as they take old computers/printers/etc etc to recycle them. (Just a shame they then didn't have either printer in store, but they are going to deliver to my door this week.)

(As a side note... when buying printers, pay close attention to the model numbers! After not finding them in Officeworks, I went into Big W, and found very very similar looking printers to the 2 above. I nearly bought both - but then noticed the Canon was a 1-cartridge colour, not the multi colour. I did buy however the Brother 2300 mono laser, thinking it was the same... then discovered half way home - it doesn't do wifi! Had to go back with tail between legs and get a refund - then buy from Officeworks website.)

Thanks to everyone above for your comments. I appreciate the conversation.

Cheers

I actually have very good luck with Canon printers. I’m able to find cheap cartridges on Amazon and the last one I had lasted 4 years. I know that doesn’t sound like much but I paid like 200 for it and was printing and scanning around 1000 pages per week. So it was being used very heavily. I also like all the different options they offer for scanning.

I figure there was a reason that Apple chose the Canon print engine for their LaserWriters and Stylewriters... Of course - as noted that was a LONG time ago. No idea if Canon really holds any reputation for their printing these days - but I noted that Officeworks don't stock any Canon laser products.

6 months later...

Still happy with the choice to get both B&W Laser, and Inkjet printers.

Wife's just been printing out some activities for her Scout troop, and the Laser does a great job at it. Fast, crisp, and much more economical than using a colour inkjet on a bunch of b&w (or what can be done as b&w) pages.

I'm still shocked that the inkjet didn't have a paper tray (and just a feeder at the back -- I think the only printer I've ever owned that didn't have a proper tray was the ImageWriter II!) - but in reality - the colour printer gets a lot less use, and when it is being used, it could be with regular paper or photographic. The printer likes to know what paper is being used, and seems to know when you've played with the feeder to change the paper over, so - no big deal. Just fire it up, put the paper in and confirm what type, then print.

Having them both wireless has also worked out perfectly - just a power cable to each, and all of my devices, computers and hand helds, are printing to them without issue.

Thanks for bumping this thread. I never saw it. I have a Canon inkjet that just refuses to die. I lost the scanning capability several Mac OS upgrades ago. I've had my eye on Brother laser printers and it sounds like that is a good choice!

Good timing :)

I certainly am happy so far with the Brother. As noted, it's only b&w, but that was specifically chosen to marry with a colour inkjet. Both of them essentially low-end printers, but both with wifi abilities.

That's fine with me. Even though my Canon can (badly) print color I've just been buying black ink cartridges for it. It's so old it's connected to my computer via a long USB cable. 😐

Hi everyone!

I have been using Canon PIXMA TS8350 for a year. It can automatically print both sides of a page, scan at high-resolution and with the help of its rear paper feed, it can handle almost any kind of printable media from blank CDs to fingernail stickers. I have been very satisfied with this device so far.

Hey friends, just wanted to chime in on the printer convo. I've had some pretty rough experiences with printers in the past, but I've found one that I actually like and trust. It's from MFD UK. They have a good selection, and I've never had any problems with customer service. Just wanted to share my experience, hope it helps someone out!

Well, shucks.
Why won't you tell us which printer that IS...?

My older Canon pixma inkjet printer died and I replaced it with a 2 year old Canon pixma printer--this one has wifi capability and a built in flatbed scanner--was able to pick it up for $15. Will definitely pour much more than that with ink, but considering it will be used infrequently not a problem.

The Brother personal laser printer still marches on--used daily, it doesn't seem to care if the toner cartridges are genuine or generic.
