just checked at owc and you can get a 1.25 cpu for 50 more bucks and run most of em at 1.33, i think this is the best option and then a 9000 card or better, anyways iam wanting a 9800 but since they dont have adc ill wait until they get a little cheaper to make up for the $100 adapter ill need for my apple monitor. then pretty much the frames i get at 640 on my geforce3 ill be getting at 1280 on a 9800 and i think ill be able to live with that for another couple of years.
 
The G5 cards have a different place for the ADC power connector on the AGP slot. I can't remember how it works, but I think you can use older cards in the newer machines, but you lose the ADC power and you can't use the newer cards in the older machines because it won't physically fit into the slot.
 
Succesive generations of DirectX support for graphics cards usually also includes support for OpenGL at a similar level. OpenGL has continued to improve at a similar pace as DirectX.
