Which ram is the correct one?

Are you saying CRUCIAL is made/designed for the iMac or OWC? Which one?
 
Technically I probably cannot find any reason that the XXXX is "less" reliable or compatible than OWCs. Macs dont use any special ram.

But OWC actually tests their ram in real iMacs. They bought all 6 base iMac configurations to start testing. XXXX does not. And never will.

OWC only sells Mac stuff. They are die hard Mac people. They sponsor a great Mac forum where the owner and head tech guy post regularly. Im not sure why you havent heard of them. They have been at every Macworld ever. Including the last 2 in SF when Apple wasnt there. They advertise on every mac site and in every magazine.

My biggest boost is that they give excellent customer service. If your XXXX ram doesnt work then who do you call? newegg? or XXXX? Im happy to pay an extra $10 for that. Even if I never need it.

Why did you buy a mac when you can get a similar PC for a lot less?

Its your money, spend it as you like. I guess for me its piece of mind.

Ah, I see. Why didn't you mention in the other threads? I was planning on buying this (Crucial 8GB (2 x 4GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Laptop Memory Model CT2KIT51264BC1339), but now you've convinced me that I might as well buy OWC.

It makes no difference. It really really makes no difference. Ram is ram is ram. And the imac uses a z68 chipset same as is available on a PC. Just use whatever. There is no reason to spend more.

Even with the corsair sold out on newegg they still have 8gb of G.skill for $82.99

Both have had reviews from mac users saying it works just fine.
 
Hm. Well, I'm now oscillating between the OWC and the Crucial. I'll decide closer to when I am planning to purchase the iMac (i.e., after WWDC).
 
Crucial's website and memory check utility is wrong. I was a little confused at first also (just ordered the crucial 8gb kit last week). But anyway, you want the one in the second link- it's what you want.

No, OWC is designed for Mac.

I think u guys convinced me to get OWC instead of Crucial, after all type in youtube OWC Mac and see how many ppl posted videos of instaling OWC ram in their macs, and then try to put CRUCIAL ram in mac or macbook, only a few.

i think just to be safe ill spend that extra 15 bucks to get the OWC. what do u guys think?

I know archer is saying theres no difference but i know theres a difference between brands , some just make better ram than others, now , i never tried OWC but from the many people who installed it, and i treid to google OWC ram problem and such but cant find anything bad about them.

I've been building PC's for years. And I make computer chips for a living. So this ain't my first rodeo.

Very very few companies that sell ram actually made the ram. I very much doubt OWC makes their own ram. Almost all companies have their ram made at foundries for them. It is likely that several brands of ram are being made in the same fab, in the same tools at the same time.

Nvidia doesn't even make their own graphics chips. And I know ATI didn't up until their AMD purchase. I don't know if AMD has taken over manufacturing but I personally worked on Nvidia and ATI video chips in the same fab. I had the wafers side by side and put them in the same processing equipment. The biggest difference between them is the photo mask sets used.

You can pay more if you want. I have no doubt OWC will work. But so will no name brands. I know because i've made them. And all ram can have problems. You can get ram DOA from any company. Most likely an issue in assembly or shipping. Just like any other part.

archer now u confused me even more man, i just cant decide which to get, crucial or OWC.

Archer, from ur experience, will i see a difference from 4GB that i have now to 12GB of Ram? i use all kinds of programs such as photoshop, i work, i life applications such as garageband, iphoto

will the system work more snappier? According to all the graphs and info on OWC's website thats surely what will happen.

One thing i just found out though by googling is that OWC doesnt make their ram, they basically have different manufacturers and when u order, whichever ram they have at the moment is what u will get which i find kind of weird .. basically they only put the OWC sticker on it.

i know that crucial is made by crucial factories though.

The brand doesn't make it faster BUT the #of GB's does
to sum it up

Brands = NO DIFFERENCE

4GB vs 8GB vs 12GB vs. 16GB etc. = DIFFERENCE

The stock iMac has 4GB ( 2 x 2GB) , on the two remaining RAM slots, I can add 8GB (2 x 4GB). That would work just fine, right? (speed wise). That's what I plan on doing, (installing my own RAM plus the one already included)
 
For the things you have said in a different post you would use your computer for, no, you don't need 12gb of ram.

For you I bet 4gb is enough. And I would get your imac first and start using it and watch the activity monitor as it will tell you if you are using up all your ram. Then you can decide if you need more. There is no rush to buy more now when you don't even have your imac yet.

Hell, you can wait for me to install the corsair and see if it works. I can be the guinea pig! It already shipped and should be here in a few days.

Don't trust graphs from retailers. It's all marketing.

I am using a new imac now, with 4gb of ram, and it's fine for what I use it for at the moment. It is getting close to using all 4gb at times.
I'm getting more because my wife is taking photography classes and starting to use photoshop heavily so it's getting to the point where I need more. Though honestly, even then I think 8gb would be enough.

iRobby, the amount only makes a difference if your computer can use all that you are giving it. Otherwise it's just wasted.
 
i think i changed my mind back to crucial because from what i read they use MICRON chips which are the best, OWC sometimes uses micron, so u never know what u get, they dont make their own ram, heck sometimes u get crucial ram when u buy from owc.

All of these threads should be closed and combined into one named RAM for Ra-tards. It's ridiculous how the same thing keeps happening over and over. Then people post to a few of them at once.

I get that you're afraid to do the wrong thing but as long as what you're putting it is exactly the same as what's in there...no problems.
 
I too went through all the seconding guessing and not knowing what RAM to get for my 2011 3.4Ghz iMac. In the end I went with Crucial. I couldn't be simpler and happier with the upgrade. I have bought all my memory through Crucial and have never had a single issue with any of my Mac memory upgrades.

Ya there may be cheaper memory out there, and you might be able to drop $10 or $15 , but like previous poster said….you spend $2k on iMac. And all the second guessing and wondering….Crucial is always dead on, great customer service, live chat to double check you have correct kit picked, fast shipping….there’s your $15 saving just in CS.

u dont have crucial in europe? id get that Corsair if these 3 options are all u can get.
 
RAM is RAM is RAM - if it comes with a lifetime warranty, what does it matter what brand it is?
G.Skill comes with a Lifetime warranty in the US...would imagine that it would be the same in EU

My iMac 21.5" Mid 2010 - sn: W804507HHJW
1. 2x2GB oryginal Samsung(0x80CE) low density (16 memory chips per PCB) OK

But after upgrade :

2. 2x8GB Corsair fail CMSO16GX3M2A1333C9 low density (16 memory chips per PCB) - too big are not compatible

3. 2x4GB Corsair(0x029E) fail CMSA8GX3M2A1333C9 low density (16 memory chips per PCB) - why ??

4. 2x4GB Geil fail GS38GB1333C9DC high density (8 memory chips per PCB)

I've got always error after upgrade.
Sometimes system hang at Apple logo, sometimes restarts(ask for shut down) after few minutes.
Depends on Bank/Dimm configuration and memory load (idle OS or Photoshop)

My oryginal RAM ad.1 works perfect.

What's the crack ?
Especially ad.3 ?
I thought it may be the low/high density modules problem.

What do You think ?
