You want this thing to last you for 5 years? I say get the base 15" MBP, and in 3 years or so, sell it and upgrade with the money you saved by not purchasing a 17".

personally, the only thing right now that I have going for the 17" is the pixel density. If they upped teh 15" to 1680x1050, then I'd say go for the 15" all the way. Oh, and 8GB RAM limit

Me too. *sigh*

I would get the newer model ONLY because you get a better GFX card and the possibility of 8GB of RAM down the road.

I would still get the 17" because you basically get the resolution of a 24" in a 17" body that you can carry around with you, and that 1.8" makes a big difference. If anything, I'd get the 17" and (someone else's matte) 24" LED later on down the road.

It would be nice to know WHEN I could get the new 17", since I'm a bit impatient and don't want to wait for another month.

Right. I would be pulling my hair out too. My objective/biased stance on the matter is either buy the refurbished old school model now since you can get it cheaper, or wait for the new one to go refurbished since getting 15% off Apple machines is always good no matter how long the wait.

If you could handle using a MacBook in the meantime, get one and use it until the new ones go refurbished.

Hi, I have finally decided to buy a Macbook Pro, but I have no idea which one t get at the moment I have 3 options (maybe 4 if I get enough money :)). i can either buy a 15" with standard configuration, a 17" with standard configuration or a 15" with 2.8ghz speed or maybe a 17" with 2.93ghz speed if I have enough money.

The problem is I have no idea which one to get. I would be using this for surfing the net, emails, writing documents, quite photo editing/graphic design (not professionally) and maybe a bit of web design, I WONT be using this for gaming. I also want this to last me most of the 5 year lifespan so I can use it when i go to college in 2 years. I have an iMac at home, but I want this to be my primary computer but at the moment we have to use those Asus EEEPCs at school so until I go to College i wont be using it for work.

What I think is the best idea is to get the 15" with the 2.8ghz, but, if I get that it is actually more expensive than the 17" with standard configuration. The problem with the 17" inch is that I have heard that the screen is awkward for traveling on planes and coaches etc. Then i thought maybe I could save €300 and buy the 15" standard config because maybe I dont need the extra speed for what I will be doing. I kind of like the idea of the 17" screen but because I live in Ireland I cant go in to an apple store and look at the size of the two

Hope you guys can help!

Sorry if it is kind of long :p

I have a 17" and I'm in love with it. That said, I do quite a bit of video editing on it while on the road so the extra screen real estate is really appreciated, and I really dont find it a hassle to travel with at all. (just find the right case) I spent more time finding the perfect case for it than picking out the computer itself. That said, for what your doing I could totally understand buying the 15" standard config. You'll be thrilled with either. The new designs are sexy too. I'm jealous.

I'm not sure the new design is sexy. It's the same as the macbook design. There is nothing to distinguish one from the other.

In all honesty, I'm not complain about the size of it. I kinda like it, feels like I got everything!!

Speaking of which...
For those of you who can't decide, why not get them both?
They're not that expensive and its always nice to gave a spare! :D

Exactly, the new designs, MB & MBP, are sexy.

I do have to admit that while I may not agree with the hardware decisions, the designs are top notch for Apple laptops.

Although, the PC variations are 90% there, the ones without the wedge shape are about 95% to the bar that Apple raised with the Unibody. Add to that the far superior hardware in the PCs and it's a pretty close call to which machine I'd rather have, in some instances the PC wins hands down like the Sony TT.

But the Unibodies are the best I've seen since the first Aluminum Powerbooks debuted.

I have decided to go with the 17". It seems that everyone that has one says that they're not that annoying to be around which was the main reason I wasnt going to get one but seeing as its is only €200 more I just thought; screw it it I'll just buy the 17"! And also, seeing as I dont know what I'm gonna study when I go to college I might end up doing something like video editing and end up regretting getting the 15".

Thanks for all the great advice everyone, you really helped clear things up for me!
