2012 8gb 256gb macbook pro retina 15"

or

2013 8gb 256gb macbook pro retina 13"

i can get the 15" for only 50 more but is it worth it to have the newer 2013 model...

Well the 15" is more capable of intensive tasks, but it all depends on what you intend to do with it.

Give us your typical uses as well as needs for travel and we will be able to give you better advice.

as far as travel i will take it maybe everyday... iwork in a school system IT department however they supply me with a macbook air for work so it would purely out of want taking it...otherwise use at home...i will programming..with node ... no video editing or anything like that...maybe attach to a monitor or two and use a couple vms for experimenting..otherwise basic everyday use

Whichever you want, for that use case it'll make no difference unless you plan to attach to a 4K monitor in which case get the 15 inch.

I would go with the 13 inch for probability myself.
