I agree, I actually think the E is a much cooler ship. But I gotta be honest, I have too many memories of the D ;). The E seems too much like hollywood glitz, I didn't put in it's time!

That's true, we didn't really see much of it. I guess I would rate E over D just for external aesthetics. Although I know D much better as well after watching it for all those years, it's saucer always seemed to big, the separation function seemed hokey, and I don't know, a few other things I guess made it less visually appealing for me.

By the way, I am so proud of the mac rumors community. Who would have thought a Star Trek thread would get close to 50 posts! Growing I am sure :D :D

Actually it doesn't surprise me in the least. Many people are always seem to categorize Mac users as geeks, so it doesn't surprise me if a discussion like this breaks out. ;)

Just start a thread on "Which is the best Star Wars movie", "Which Star Trek captain is the best", "Who is your favorite X-Men member", etc. etc. and you'll see just as good of a response. :p

This site should help you out a lot. Just click on the vessel icons on the left-hand side for a good collection of info.

Thanks. Whooda guessed at all the variety? Looks like some of the later ones got a little portly.

Do they still use models on the latest shows or is it all cgi? The original one for the TV show was 11 feet long, weighed 200 lbs. and cost $600 to build..

Ahh, I think I remember. That wasn't a federation ship at all, was it?

The prometheus? It was a prototype. In the series finale, you can see one escorting Voyager.

That's my favorite ship, though I like the E, defiant, and Akira :)

D'oh. Not the one which was an alien, masquerading as a 'lifeboat' type thing, then. My bad.

I've not seen the series finale of Voyager, but I know they get home 'cause I've seen all the NG movies...

I watched the finale at WWDC when it came out. Had that not been the "movie" I have a suspicion that the room would have been rather empty.

My favorite is the NX-01 from Enterprise.

You misunderstand me, I know they get home because Janeway appears as Admiral, or someother command, in the movies. I do know a movie from a series...

Little else though.

No problem. Yah, they definitely seem to get bigger as time goes on. ;)

As for the models, I believe TOS ad TNG used models (TNG only sometimes), and everything else has been purely CGI. I could easily be wrong though, someone correct me if that's the case...

I wonder how much that original Enterprise model would sell for nowadays... ;)

That shipwreck wasn't as dramatic in my opinion as the original one in Star Trek III. I guess there was just a lot more of a sense of loss and abandonment when Kirk watched it burn through the atmosphere like that, and then they were stuck with a Klingon ship.

Plus, that was the only time a Star Trek captain was ballsy enough to actually go through with the auto-destruct sequence! ;)

Truly, the destuction of the Enterprise in A was such a great scene as Kirk watched the wreckage streak across the sky.
I put my vote in for Enterprise A and E I never liked the D design which always seemed too rounded and flat, especially the saucer section which was sort of oblong.
NCC-1701A had great lines, kind of a Gernbackian steamer. And E just looks like the Ferrari version, with sharper lines and a lower stance. But, then I always like the Excelsior too, which had a great lower body section that was sort of bird-like.

Hmm, I'm not sure that this is the worst luck. It's just that there's always a new Enterprise. The U.S.S. Yamato (the same ship as Enterprise-D) was destroyed during TNG, i.e. before the Enterprise. Isn't this much more bad luck? The difference is that there's no Yamato-B, so it can't be destroyed again.
That reminds me, the Yamato/Argo from Star Blazers has to be the ugliest space ship ever.

Which One was my favorite.

Honestly, the Best-Lookin' most gorgeous Enterprise in the Entire Star Trek Universe is the Enterprise Refit, Used in The Motion Picture, The Wrath of Khan, and FInally Until its (Very unfortunate) Demise in The Search for Spock. The pounding it took, the gallant way is gave its all to Find V GER, Kick Khans Butt, and Transport Scotty, Bones, Kirk, Chekov and Sulu onto Genises mere seconds before it blew up is nothing short of heroic, for a ship. Besides, its the only ship to take that much pounding from 2 ships, and still function. But, Thats jus' me. All of the Movie's with Kirk and Co had beautiful Starships, and the one from TOS was beautiful to, but not as nice as this one was.
And the battle damage was ultra cool. Really gave that ship class. But, one thing that bothers me, when the Defiant Hit the Ship with Phasers and cut into not only the photon topedo section, but also the top of the Conecting Fin that keeps the Saucer to the Secondary hull how did it stay together? it was Beat so bad.
Meh, only that ship could take that much abuse and still win.

Hi,

I can't tell which one was my personal favorite. I liked them all.

Does anybody know if there will be another movie? How does the StarTrek world continue?

I'd have thought you would know, with a nick like that ;) Last time I checked (when Enterprise was cancelled) the official line was that they were going to give the StarTrek franchise a rest for a while. I guess one of the motivations might be to wait for special effects prices to fall so they can afford to do more on that front (although, I like the moral story lines of ST:TNG best).

How does the StarTrek world continue?

I would guess that a StarFleet Academy series or a film to fit between Archer's Enterprise and Kirk's would be next. The academy seems to be a place where the producers want to go, but I think it would be pants.

Personally, I'd like to see a series based on a squdron of ten two-person Delta-X wing's (set after Voyager gets home) - like a space version of the Red Arrows meets Top Gun. They would be the official display team for StarFleet but also a crack team of dog-fighters. So they are sometimes required to perform at ceremonies, sometimes required to escort dipolmatic ships but sometimes attached to one of the FlagShips or space stations for strategic missions, reconnoissance, covert operations, etc.

Could provide a good platform for a mix of action and human-introspection story lines plus lots of changes of scenery and opportunities for cameos from ST:TNG, DS9 and Voyager characters.

Wow, someone resurrected this thread after a year... I had completely forgot about it. Yeah, no more Star Trek for a while, I'm thinking. Time for a rest...

The Enterprise-D was the worst one. One feature I always joked about is having the bridge separate from the saucer section when things got bad with the Romulans or Borg. Enterprise-A was the best. Enteprise-E is a huge improvement in the right direction from -D.

I wonder if we will see a new Enterprise design in the next 10 years from the movies or TV?
Not sure if you realize it or not but the original (60's) enterprise design by Gene had the ability to seperate but they never used it because they couldn't afford the special effects. It also had holodecks. I know you can see them in the animated series and I believe they do the saucer sep in the animated as well. But that one I am not sure of.

That's right, although I don't think though that the original Enterprise design could reattach its saucer – it was intended as a last resort escape plan. I seem to remember an episode where Kirk tells Scotty to prepare for an emergency saucer separation (that never actually happens) to combat some threat or other, but I might be wrong...

Fret not – we've got Doctor Who to keep us entertained in the meantime. ;)

putting more top gun into star trek -> more showering scenes

(having just watched top gun 2 days ago)

For me I really would love to see them make a DS9 movie. While DS9 was VERY slow at the beginning it got truly awesome toward the end. The dominion wars were the bomb and the Defiant was the hottest ship in the fleet. For a series I could see something along the lines of academy days and delta squad. You never know.

I agree - I really disliked DS9 at the beginning , but then really got into it during the last 3 seasons or so. I love how epic the last season and a bit were, with Species 8427 (or whatever it was called), and how all the stories tied into essentially one long, amazing episode.
