My son is 5 years old! Constantly asks for the phone to play games! The screen is small I'm worried about his eyesight! I'm thinking of buying a tablet, there's a bigger screen after all. What to choose for his age?

From what I've read. There's no credible scientific research saying phone screens damages your eyes. People have been worried about screens since the TV came out.

At any rate. I'd just get the cheapest current gen iPad. That'll let your kid play any games they want. There's no reason to blow a whole lot of extra money on an iPhone. Also the bigger screen will be more enjoyable for gaming. It's not like he needs to carry it in his pocket all the time. Pair it with the Nintendo Joy-Con controllers.

if you want something a bit smaller. Get the iPad Mini. Cheap Android tablets are garbage. Actually most of the expensive ones are pretty bad too. Besides a handful of them. Also there's very little software for Android optimized for the size of tablets. The regular iPad offers excellent bang for the buck.

I gave my first iPad (an iPad 2) to a grandson -- back when he was 4 years old --- with a little, initial help from his parents (re: set up, and such), he loved it, and really took to it -- for pleasure, learning, and playing.. So catching one of the latest iPad's that fits your budget, would be my suggestion.
On a side note -- his useage sure helped prepare him for school.

Least expensive iPad for sale. There maybe refurbished models though Apple. From a comment in this thread, 5 year olds are perfectly capable gently handling an iPad, but no guarantees. :)
