I have some footage on a DVD and want to import it into iMovie in order to edit it, but I don't seem to be able to do it. The DVD is for use with a normal DVD player. I used handbrake to make a single .avi file of the footage but still iMovie wouldn't handle it.

Do I need another application? If so, which one?

iMovie likes Quicktime based files. Try bringing it in as DV in a .mov wrapper.

As much as I hate to say it why not use MP4. Open the AVI file (saves time reimporting the disc) in Handbrake and change the output format to MP4.

Although MP4 is meant as a delivery format, iMovie will like it.

Check here for more info on iMovie and codec support.

While I was waiting for a reply, I decided to try reimporting the movie again with handbrake and into a mp4 format. I didn't know I could just convert the .avi file. Handbrake is still churning away.

I guess this will work then. Thanks guys!
