Anyone used Elmedia? I know it's a closed-source paid application, however it allows airplay-style streaming to TVs etc which isn't something I've seen on IINA or VLC.

Well, AirPlay is a system function. I can AirPlay whatever video I play with IINA (or any other player for that matter) to my tv via the menubar item.

AirPlay Mirroring is a system function, but it sucks for playing video, because it has to recompress the whole screen and send it to the AppleTV. Standard Airplay can just send the video file to the AppleTV, and it will use less bandwidth, and have better quality.

Your screenshot looks like a standard browser warning for downloaded files of certain file types. As long as VLC comes also in a *.dmg, you should be presented with the same warning.
What browser do you use?
Not true at all! I use Brave, and I just downloaded the latest version of VLC. Here is what it says:

Where do you folks come up with such bizarre claims? I have NEVER seen that alert I got with IINA!

Ah, I messed these two up. You’re right.

Well, maybe ask the guys from Brave what they use to determine whether to show this warning or not?
A *.dmg per se can’t harm your computer. Software contained in it might. IINA downloaded from the developers site won’t, and as was stated above is notarised by Apple.

I've just installed Brave 1.8.96 and it doesn't display that warning.

Hmm. Could you let me know what link you used to download it? Again I just tried it a few minutes ago. What I did was type IINA in the "address line" in Brave, and it returned numerous links. The first one was their actual site, which is what I chose to download it. But got the message again!

Yet, when I downloaded it from that site with either the latest versions of Firefox or Google Chrome, did not get that message. Like you, I have the latest version of Brave.

The official link from the site https://dl.iina.io/IINA.v1.0.6.dmg and from GitHub https://github.com/iina/iina/releases/download/v1.0.6/IINA.v1.0.6.dmg

But got the message again!
It's a bug in Brave

What about streaming to stuff like Chromecast though?

First, I did try and download it again from those sites (first one is the one I originally used), and got the same message.

Secondly, turning Safe browsing on or off had no effect.

I'll just stick with VLC. I've been using it for so many years, it never failed me, and it's rock solid. I also know of others who have had the same experiences.

VLC. Went to IINA but the coloring was off, was a little blockier, and doesn't allow the audio boost that VLC does. I like putting VLC at 150% audio for my macbook then just turning the speakers down a little. Sounds much better.

I have VLC, IINA, as well as the command line mpv installed. However the one I use is Optimus Player which is closed source but cheap. The resource utilisation is minimal (much better than VLC/mpv) and it seems to be the only one which properly supports colour management in video (it seems that macOS is the only platform which implements it at the system level and Optimus Player takes advantage of that). It has a very minimal interface and features which I don't care about - performance is everything for me, also don't care much about its advanced support for AirPlay but it's nice to have. I have OCD about performance and accurate colour (my projector and TV are calibrated for example).
