If only they listened to me, and did not box watches and straps, pre-packed in colour combinations at the factory, this would not happen :)

But then, it could happen that they have the watch you want, but the strap you want is sold out. What do you do in that case? You can't just walk out with the watch, it's useless without the strap. So you buy a temporary band in a color you don't really want, or you go home without a watch.

That is the same end result as when the watch and strap is boxed together, isn't it?

No :)

I am really struggling to understand why people can't get this.

You have a cake shop, and there are 6 ribbons that go round the cake of different colours.

You don't box up 50 cakes with red ribbons, 50 with green ribbons, 50 with white ribbons.

You have the cakes, with no ribbons, then you have a MASSIVE stock of various colour ribbons, and add them per customer request at the time.
It's a far more sensible way to manage stock as you can store 1000's or ribbons in no space at all, and almost never run out of ribbon colors.

Once you pre-pack cakes with ribbons, it will become terrible.

You always do this in stores, it's what people do all the time.
You just then say, running low on white ribbons, and get some more in.

I don't know why everyone is struggling with understanding this is now things are normally done.

Space Gray Sport but mostly because it's the cheapest w/ a black band. The other sport band colors are so gross. I can't see wearing a white or bright blue band in everyday wear. If they would have had an Aluminum Sport w/black band at $349/$399, I think it would have sold out first.

But that's not how watches are normally sold. Not every combination "works" and they are sold as a package. You can purchase replacement straps separately, and you can do that with the Apple Watch, too.

For the Sports watch, do we know how many colours you will be able to buy, boxed ready?
And what colours you can only get if you buy those colours separately ?

All colors can be bought separately.

Boxed combinations:
Space Grey + Black
Silver + All colors except Black

What are your thoughts about me going into an Apple Store on launch day and actually walking out with an Apple watch? (serious question).

Although I plan on purchasing the Apple Watch I'm still undecided on band. I didn't want to pre-order because the Apple rep on chat told me I'd have to take the entire watch in to exchange just the band. So availability in the store would be crucial.

The last thing I'd want to hear is "We're out of stock and wont have any for a month" leaving me in a position where I can't even return the watch for a different band.

Here's what I'd probably do in your situation:

1) As soon as pre-ordering is up, place TWO orders; one for each watch/band combo you have in mind.
2) Go to a nearby Apple Store the same day and look at both of them in person.
3) Go back online and cancel one of the orders immediately afterward.

Sport models, probably space black ones. Because of the lowest price, and people may want to try on before buying the more expensive one ss/gold.

9to5mac had over 17,000 people choose their exact models. Heres the poll.

30% - 42mm Space Gray Aluminum Case with Black Sport Band ($399)
8.7% - 38mm Space Gray Aluminum Case with Black Sport Band ($349)
7.3% - 42mm Space Black Case with Space Black Stainless Steel Link Bracelet ($1099)

I'm not too surprised. 9to5Mac has a mostly male audience, and so the cheapest and most expensive of the mainstream models are the most popular. If there were more women in the survey, we'd probably see the 38mm stainless steel link band models (silver and space black) near the top, as well as one or two of the modern buckle versions.

it actually isn't.

but regarding the watch, it'll probably be hard for a lot of people to pre-order with so many questions about size and bands. i think people will need to try it on before buying. and i also think demand here in these forums aren't representative of demand in the real world. i just don't hear people talking about the watch like i do the phone or the tablet (anecdotal, i know, but still). i'd be surprised if any one model did sell out.

I've had many people approach me about the watch. Different places, I suppose.

I am guessing Space Grey and/or White/Silver Sport, based on poll results.

Too bad, because that is the one I wanted. I might just pick up the Sport in a less popular color (green) and swap the band with a black one, instead of waiting a month for more supply of the Space Grey.

That sounds like a good idea. I'll just order a Space Grey and a stainless steel. Plus there'll be a 14 day return policy.

Apple has a proven track record of creating a story so convincing we'll never know the status. Keeping the public thinking that demand is overwhelming and supply is limited is the oldest trick in the book. Apple plays their customers to perfection. Hence the lines outside the stores on release day. Year after year Apple remains in complete control.

Source, please?

Apple has a proven track record of creating real demand. Not just smoke and mirrors.

Much depends on inventory. I would bet the cheaper aluminum would sell out first and then the stainless models after that. As much as the watches are desired by many, I do not think the watch will be like a new iPhone and hard to get after a few weeks. All depends on inventory and how Apple thought is would sell.

I agree. If you look at any poll, this version is by far the most popular

Geting this one for myself. And especially at the price point, it's perfect. I can't justify spending $700+ for a watch right now when i don't even know how much i'll like this thing. $350 is a good starting point to which i can say "who knows? Why not try it out?"

Well I don't know if they will allow pre-orders for the Edition, but I suspect that red Edition will be the hardest to find. My thought is that (A) it is the best looking one and (B) that if you are buying something purely for status it makes the most sense to buy the most expensive one. If the extra $7,000 makes any difference to you then you shouldn't be buying an Edition in the first place. Also the Edition watches have special colors on the knobs. So your Edition watch is forever branded at its price point in a way the Sport or SS is not. So if you don't buy the red one initially you can't fake it by putting a red band on it later. Frankly I think people are missing the point when they say the Edition starts at $10,000. The $10,000 version is going to be the worst seller of all the Editions. The media really should be thinking of the Edition as a $15,000 watch.

I'm very curious what the scene will be on launch day at a place like Saks Fifth Avenue or one of the other high end places that are rumored to be getting the Edition for sale.

No matter how many watches Apple has made, and no matter how many watches get sold, you will find Apple stores will get sold out ;)
