welp, at least disk defrag is free...however, you forgot one more: what are you using for a firewall?!?!

I have to use Examsoft too, what law school are you in?

Cursed be the legal world for relying on Windows so much:
- WordPerfect (would be nice if Corel hadn't dropped Mac support...)
- MS Word 2000 (in order to use a Law Review template with extensive VisualBasic scripting that is, really annoyingly, not compatible with MS Word 2004 Mac)
- ExamSoft SofTest (the most awful program ever, but I need it in order to take exams on the computer because my law school has standardized on ExamSoft. It boots up Windows and then -- as an anti-cheating measure -- locks you out of all functions except for the exam-taking environment, so it would be a violation of the academic code to run it in VirtualPC)

Top 9 from least to most.

9. RightFax Client
8. Internet Explorer (I still have a number of web based company apps that don't run in anything other then IE6.)
7. Homeworld 2
6. Black & White 2
5. Microsoft Streets & Trips
4. A Second Life client that doesn't suck (OS X's client is pathetic.)
3. Microsoft Visio
2. Civilization IV
1. Microsoft Access

And will I dual boot? DAMN straight!

Nothing :D

I'm happily living a Mac-only life. On the other hand, if I can run Windows games, that'll be a plus :)

i wish i could run rome:total war barbarian invasion on my mac. awesome game. i WOULD dual boot to get that. There are more games, but that is the one i want to play now.

Because i am an mechanical engineering student i need a lot of CAD programs, few are

1. Solidworks
2. MathCAD
3. PRO/E

etc.

i would rather not dual boot but run something like virtual PC.

The odd game I guess, and some GPS navigation software but I don't think I could be bothered with dual booting.

I never encountered this problem while I was at law school - they were happy as long as when handed in the Opinions, Statements of Case, etc, were all in the correct format. Whether I'd used particular templates or whatever beforehand didn't matter at all. Just as in a real court!

I do have difficulty without Paint Shop Pro though. I just can't afford Photoshop.

I've been trying over the last few years to move to more open source and/or cross platform apps so there isn't much left, but they are all critical.

Visual Studio
Carrara (I know there is a Mac version, but I develop plug-ins so need to run both Mac and PC)
City of Heroes/Villians
MS Money

Everything else I could probably get an OSX something to replace, but it might cost more money than I am willing to spend (eg. no more Corel for Mac so I'd have to get the much more expensive Adobe equivalents, that adds about 1k to any switch attempt).

If I can dual boot and/or do a VMWare/Virtual PC thing with full 3D acceleration, that would be perfect. Would really love to see someone do a seamless windows kind of thing so I don't even have to see the Windows desktop if I don't want to.

ewinemiller, I like this idea. You mean something like Apple's X11 implementation, where X11 applications use the Aqua interface, right? I'd use this option if it was available to me.

Exactly. I actually remember it being rumored for Virtual PC 6 or 7 I believe. The same one they were saying would pass along 3D calls to the hardware. Neither rumor turned out to be true, but would certainly love to see that feature.

I used to work on a project a few years back where our deployment method of choice was to run a rootless citrix kind of thing. You'd launch an icon off your desktop which would hit a windows server running Citrix. The app would open without you ever seeing a desktop and behave exactly like it was running local though it was executing on the server. There was no terminal services or remote desktop client UI to get in the user's way. If they can do it for that, they could do it for some virtual machine tool.
