My AEBS is 4 years old, does NOT have to be reset and I can hardly recall any issues with it. Still going strong. I will probably get a dual band model within the next year or so. Just waiting for my current model to give up the ghost!

I wouldn't hesitate recommending a AEBS to someone looking for a router. The added expense is WELL worth the lack of problems you might encounter with other routers in either set-up or maintenance. Plus the Extreme allows external HDD and printers.

Ah. I'll def. look into it. I might pick up a AEBS and maybe a express at a later date if my traveling picks up or I need a booster. I would love to really have the HDD's attached to it. The only downfall I suppose is your HDD's need to then be near your cable inlet unless you ran ethernet wires....

If you go the route of an AEBS, definitely check out the Refurb store on Apple.com -- http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC340LL/A

The one comment I'd say is that my experience with plugging USB HDD's into a router or is that performance really stinks. Maybe its different with the AEBS, but nothing else I've tried has given decent performance.

I'd settled on going with a Synology DiskStation ds211j but decided to resurrect an old desktop with a Windows Server license through MSDNAA and am getting decent performance. FreeNAS was another option I'd tried on the server but it didn't support the onboard ethernet controller.

Well...it's a USB port, so only USB HDDs can be connected. Ethernet plays no role in this.

And really, what downfall? What does it matter where the hard drive is located.... as long as you can access it from your computer, right? Hooking a USB 2.0 drive to your AEBS, you may share this drive with anyone on the network. My wife and I both share our drive which is located in the bedroom with the AEBS. My computer and her laptop are never in that room.
