I bought some "off road" skates as an alternative for my exercising. Typically I am doing "outdoor walks" and "other" which is usually stretching and such.

Today was the first test run. I managed not to do a face plant but as far as speed, I'm going slower than walking speed. I thought I would be better but I guess after 50 years you forget how to skate. And, since these are off road, I'm never going to be blazing around but probably should eventually get up to the speed people jog at.

The parks I visit have a variety of trails from concrete, to crushed granite, to covered in mulch, to barely a path through the under brush. I am hoping that the off road / big tires will allow me to not worry too much which path I pick.

What routine in Apple's Workout app would you think would work best?

The reason I ask is I get a bit frustrated with the Workout app right now. Sometimes when doing "outdoor walks", it just decides not to give me any exercise minutes at all and other times it gives me full value. I can't figure out a consistent pattern. A lot of my "Other" workouts is to fill in time I believe I deserve. e.g. I walk for a half hour and it gives me 5 minutes so I do "Other" for 25 minutes to fill in the lost time. I assume I'm not doing something right and would prefer to work with the app rather than fight against it.

I'm not sure on what exercise is best, but I would assume Other would be the closest to accurate you could get. When it comes to your walks and getting exercise minutes, it's all based on your heart rate. You can walk all day long, but if your heart rate doesn't get high enough then the watch won't count it as exercise.

    Thank you for the reply.
I think its more complicated than that. I know for sure there are times when my heart rate is high. But... depending upon which watch band I have and other factors, there are times when I look at it and the stat's (heart rate in particular) I'm sure is half of what it should be.

Oh... one occasion specially, it was raining so I walked around in the parking garage, up the stairs, and then back down the ramps. I really was working pretty hard and it didn't like that at all. I switched to Indoor Walking towards the very end and it was more generous but it still seemed to not be giving me a minutes credit for a minutes worth of walking.

    I would say "Other" also.

    That's what I use----

My mom gets her 30 minute workout using “other” for vacuuming the house. At her age that’s a workout.

I tried it, and my watch laughed at me.

I use "Other" when on the treadmill. I need to support myself on the handrails, and with no arm movement I don't get full credit on workout time.

As others stated, choose "Other" and when you are done, select "Name Workout." Scroll down to Skating.
