Which would you buy and why ? 3.33GHz 6-Core or 2.4GHz 8 Core Mac Pro ?

Only on artificial benchmarks.

Again, artificial benchmarks and not real-world.

Care to provide us with evidence of your real world usage demonstration that the 8c 2.4 MP is faster than the 6c 3.33 MP?

At this point without real world demonstrations and evidence, there is no way to compare two products except with artificial benchmarks.

The 2.8 refurb gives several advantages over an iMac.
-Memory expansion
-Hard drives/optical drives
-PCI slots
-CPU upgrade path
-Option of ATI 5870

The 2.8's a great deal from the refurb store too, when you catch one for $2119.

Oh I agree with that for the most part. I eliminated the iMac because I didn't feel like having to deal with an external hard drive connected by firewire. Although I didn't really care as much about the memory expansion, as 16 is likely enough for me either way.

But it still has made it hard for me to want a quad 2.8 when the iMac is faster. Probably that's irrational. But nothing I can do about that. That's just why the 3.2 looks like the better option for a bit more even though the hex is too pricey.

That's some of the same reasoning that "guided" me towards the 3.2 Quad.

That said, you can be a frugal buyer (2.8 Quad) with the intention of upgrading the processor to a Hex sometime in the future. That plan would at least allow you to sleep knowing your MP won't allows play second fiddle to an imac. :p

Well, I bit the bullet and got a hex from the refurb store -- it ended up being about $75 more than the 3.2 quad with the 5870 that I was going to buy. Definitely overkill, but my 1,1 lasted over 4 years, so hopefully this will last at least as long.

Congrats on your new MP I got mine last month and I love it. It makes my 2007 2.1 3.0 8C look very weak.

And to the OP get the 6C I really don't see any reason to get the 2.4 8C.
