No dead pixels (knock on wood). It's been flawless so far. Boots 10.3.2 in 10-15 seconds. I re-installed the system off the restore discs so I could get rid of the extra languages, Lexmark drivers, etc. Run macjanitor and repair permissions and the thing is snappy (at least it seems that way to me).

The fan is *slightly* louder than my wife's 17" iMac, which is practically silent. I attribute this to an increased power supply for the 20" screen (?). It's still relatively quiet though.
 
since you actually would benefit from the g5, there really is not question about it. the imac would be better if you were a general user. for your purposes, however, the g5 is the only logical choice.

I appreciate the info on the fan (I owned a 15" two years ago), but it shouldn't be too bad as I've been using a Dual 1.25 for a while.

I tend to agree, however, with the other posts with regard to the poster - he will probably benefit more from a G5 tower. For me, I know what I need!
