well I've managed to update to 4.1 while preserving my old baseband, only after I reinstalled Itunes because the Iphone would hang halfway through the restore process.

btw for those who don't know, you can backup the 4.1 SHSH without having to update to 4.1 first. In tiny umbrella plug in your Iphone go to advance options, select 4.1 and click Save SHSH. It now shows I have to Blobs saved 4.0 and 4.1
