I have a feeling I need a new motherboard to replace my graphics chip but I want to get some opinions from people who know this stuff more than I do.

I was playing World of Warcraft last night when the entire computer froze and a pink grid came over the computer. Could not force quit. About 10 seconds later, Kernel Panic screen and I have to hard reboot.

Every time I reboot the pink grid is still there and it kernel panics, does not get past the spinning Apple logo. I was able to hold down shift and get it to safe mode, and was able to back up my files that way. I also ran the Apple hardware test, but it said no problems found.

I am typing to you now in safe mode on this pink screen. I copied and pasted the error message I got from the "Send Report to Apple" program that launched below. Please help or confirm the problem if you can.

Could well be failing graphics hardware (or other core component), although since it boots into safe mode you might as well rule out software: Get your OS install discs, boot from those, and try reinstalling the OS. You have a backup, so you could do a complete reformat and reinstall, if you want to be absolutely sure, but just an archive and install is probably enough to confirm. If it successfully installs but panics as soon as you boot from the fresh install, probably hardware. If it doesn't, maybe your OS install just got hosed somehow (though I'd start looking at a failing drive in that case).

And if the installation fails with an error (rather than the installer just panicking like it does in non-safe-mode), again it might be worth ruling out a disk issue (which would mean installing the OS on a bootable external drive if you have one).
