White or black iPhone 5 for a man

I remember when I got my iPhone 4S last year and there was a guy next to me waiting in line talking about the iPhone and which capacity to get and I mention the color white and he goes "I don't have enough swag for that." Really? Most people slap a case on it anyway so it wouldn't matter

To each his own
ROFL@bold. Also, I see very few iPhones in cases. I work in a high volume retail setting, and I'm actually baffled by how many naked iPhones get set on my counter daily. Hell, hourly.
Nobody will question your sexuality based on the color of your phone. If it feels good, do it.
Yes and no. Any actual person will not bat an eye, but the other 98% of american society (ignore me if your not american then) will either

A.) Tell you a man with a white iPhone is effeminate.
B.) Gauge whether you've got enough "swag" for a white iPhone.

Can we just have a sub-section for guys who have so much insecure about their sexuality that they need reassurance that getting a while phone wouldn't cause their genitals to fall off?

I'm OCD (like, diagnosed) and I'll tell you the black does show a bit more. I bought a black one on release day for Sprint, then traded for a white, then I went to AT&T and got another black. So.. personally I love the black one. Both of my black ones had front and back screen protectors put on immediately. (The white one did too but I got it used.) You WILL see scuffs on the chamfered edge, however, and it seems to me like the black is more noticeable. Just my $0.02.

Yes, the 98% that lives in the middle of the country and have nothing better to do with their lives. Where I live people actually work for a living, if your phone makes and receives calls no one cares what it looks like.

 WTF does working for a living, or where you live within the U.S. have anything to do with personality, opinions on color and manliness correlations, or **** all really?

This is easily one of the most pompous, bigoted comments I've ever seen. Not to mention terribly in-accurate. Nowhere near 98% live "in the middle" of the country, and un-employment is much more prevalent high density urban areas. Which are typically not in the middle of our/my country.

I understand the point your making. That anyone with a brain, or better **** to do than nothing, isn't concerned with color. But you paint yourself an ***hole with comments like that. I mean, if you think yourself so much better than someone else, you should ******* act it as well.

Black only if you have no self esteem nor confidence.
Black or white if you have either or both.

Did you even read the OP's post??? She had NO concern about the color as it relates to gender---NONE!!! She was simply asking about the scratch resistance of each color and whether or not an O/B case would scratch it---Dang!!! So many SO quick to jump on the color vs. guy/gal debate...how bizarre

Otterbox will scratch and probably further damage your phone (re: bend, plastic leeching)

No--it won't.

Regardless of the color you choose (OP)---it will go through the normal wear and tear cycle that any phone goes through...black is less subtle when 'scuffed', but white will wear as well without a case

With a case---both my wife and I have 5s---she a black (and an Otter Box Defender) me a white (and a Spec white/gray case w/kickstand--I like it:)). Both have been owned since launch...hers an early Christmas gift, neither has any damage...both have been used constantly since purchase

The question I would ask---does the fella you're buying for have a physical job...one that he's working 'in the field' a lot--or in a position that the phone would take more abuse than a typical desk job? Or in his spare time--are his hobbies outdoor activities vs. indoor? If he's (or you) concerned about keeping it in good shape, a case is desirable...if not, and you could care less about normal wear...regardless of the color you choose, both will 'show' the wear...the black more obvious, the white--more subtle

Nice gift, BTW:)

Well sorry I made you wear out your shift and 8 keys there, the point I was trying to make was:
A - Professionally it doesn't matter
B - Personally it doesn't matter

If you're going to make an absurd statement that 98% of the country are shallow enough to even consider this an issue I'll point out where in the country these people are likely to live. It also didn't matter what color my phone was when I was unemployed for 18 months if that makes you feel any better.

If a phone color makes you worry about your sexuality/gender then maybe you're hiding something!

I will never understand why people think white is girly, as if it were pink.

And I have white 4S and work in an office in a "business" setting, and people never look at me like I'm unprofessional.

Like MJ said, it doesn't matter if you're black or white.

:p I'll expecting the new Apple keyboard you owe me to be delivered shortly.

and as far as the 98% comment, you obviously haven't been in my home town. I use the world I know as my gauge, you know?

All in all, the point I was making in my first post is that the color IS irrelevant, get what you want. I'm glad we agree there. Sorry you had to go so long without work, that sucks.

No problem, you should get it Tuesday. And sorry, arguments where you agree with each other are truly the worst!

I think it's a bit ridiculous to bring gender into iPhone colors, though I will say that my girlfriend has a white iPhone and I have a black one, strictly so we don't get them mixed up :p

OTOH, I think the black color looks a bit more professional. Also, it seems like after the white iPhone 4/4S/5 came out, nearly everyone buys white. The same goes for iPad.

I got black because I am a service technician and my hands are not always clean enough for a white phone. "Once you go black....."

I stopped by an Apple store about a week after the iPhone 5 came out and they had dozens on display. Almost all the black ones had visible scuffs, with the silver showing through the scratched anodizing. The white ones all looked great. Some were scratched upon closer inspection, but it was much less noticeable.
I also think the black ones look sort of dull and generic. From across a room, I often can't tell a black iPhone 5 from any number of black Android phones, but the white one looks unique and stands out more. Whether that's a good or bad thing is up to you.
I always buy white iThings personally, ever since my white 5GB iPod back in 2001. I even patiently waited 9 months for the white iPhone 4 to finally be released.
I might change my mind if they ever make an orange one, though ;-)

You're a racist, homophobic bigot for even asking the question.
LMFAO. He didn't. You perceived him to have, you "racist, homophobic bigot" you.

Should a man carry a white iPhone 5 due to the scratchin and scuffing on the back. If I get a black one will an otterbox protect it or will it scratch in an otter box as well. Is it better to just get white and be done with it.

Yep, he mentions being male, but not that it factors into his color choice. At best, the OP assumed that others might suggest color based on sex.
