White Unibody MB Ram limit question

Why is it limited to 4 gigs? Is this a hardware or software limitation?

well ow sell an 8gb kit and i have spoke to a few guys ha have got 8gb in there macbook. apple only support up to 4gb but the chipset can use 8gb according to a lot of people.

Apple frequently does that kind of thing, in this case I think they did it to artificially make the MacBook Pro seem better in regards to RAM. Other World Computing has tested the white Unibody MacBook and found that it successfully works with up to 8GB just like the MacBook Pro.
