...try getting applecare to cover any repairs when your UMB case is showing dents on it = GO whitebook:p

Exactly. Oh-and the aluminum is tough. That's why it looks perfect when you drop it:

I just upgraded my dad's whitebook for <40
(so, DDR3 is still only about 100% more expensive than DDR2)

that would be 200% more expensive..

and considering prices dropped from ~200 to 80 over the span of a month or two... i'd say that is good for DDR3 to be in the same range.

that would be 200% more expensive

No, it would not. If you put in "200% more" to the original 40, it will be 80 more, thus original 40 plus 80 more would be 120 total. But if you put in "100% more", it will be the original 40 plus 40 more, thus making it 80 which proves my point.

But let's not go deeper into this math off-topic ;)

(naturally you thought "twice as much" but it's not the same as "two times more". Former would be 2x original price and latter would be 3x original price. This error is very common, however...)

so after all they didn´t let me upgrade because od accounting issues on their side ... might have to do something with the insurance they use for their protection plan ...
well I´m still happy after all I got a new white macbook an additional 1gig ram and I paid nothing on top for it ... so it´s all good

as always thank you guys for your opinions !

Firewire 400 has better continous data throughput than USB 2, even though the theoretical max is better for USB2. The design of firewire means a firewire chip controls the firewire devices on the bus, not the CPU like USB too. Firewire is definitely superior, it's just that a lot of people don't use it as USB2 will do, and comes on most peripherals.

All the best professional quality soundcards I looked at when I bought one recently (top contenders for me being MOTU, Apogee, and RME), used firewire. Now if you think you might want a Firewire soundcard and/or HDD then get the whitebook and save yourself money at the same time. If you know you'll be fine with a USB soundcard, and you really want a snazzier looking aluminium one then spend the extra.

95% of people can live without firewire, it's only the fact you said you'd be doing music with it that caused a few alarm bells. If they're only small-ish projects and you have no plans of wanting a high quality firewire interface then it's all about paying 30% extra for slightly faster memory, 40GB more HDD (neither of those drive would fit nearly enough for me regardless), and extra shiny aluminium street cred.

In my case I'd have to buy the Whitebook because of my FW MOTU 828mk3, and with the spare money left over I'd buy myself and my fiance a nice meal out, buy some new shoes & clothes, and have a couple of nights down the pub with my mates!
