I agree this what you say. I have a MacBook Pro but use only for web browsing, email and a bit of writing. Although I consider myself a "professional" in my work, I do not use my MacBook Pro in a professional capacity. My next MacBook will not I doubt, be a "Pro".
Yes if one thing you learn from having a rMB is that you have probably been overspecing for years.

I suspect many of us who use PC's in our work/Office environment are using quite humble or oldish machines yet when it comes to personal choices we all have the urge to add some perceived value that we never use :D

I would say screen, KB and boot/SSD time plus high speed internet will make any laptop seem great and if looks pretty too that's nice. Most of us simply do not need 4 monitors/TB3/High I/O's and can wait 30 sec longer for something to render or compile or calculate.

Trouble is the lure of the spec sheet, bragging rights $ for bang kicks in (me included) and having the latest feels good for a short while

I'm not suggesting that mobile OS is they way to go, but it will suit some however when push comes to shove a mobile OS will let you down more often and have you reaching for your laptop/desktop

I very much like tablet/2 in 1 format and the rMB size wise fits well although it is a clamshell but if MacOS is your chosen poison then the rMB can be a wise choice but carries a hefty premium for it's footprint but you will do more often because of it portability and that adds value

Yeah it was kind of a questionable move to restrict it to what are probably it’s two lowest selling Mac models (at least I guess the biggest volume movers are the ntb and 12” if you exclude the MBA) - it won’t gain traction with developers until it’s got a significant user base, and until it gets traction with developers it remains a novelty feature not utilised to its fullest. A similar catch 22 with developers not porting apps to windows phone due to low market share ultimately killed that platform off...
I think the Touch Bar could make it to a future major revision of the 12” MacBook.

So true!.....guilty as charged!

I love my 12" rMB

But I don't like having this on my desk. Then again I only have to plug in one cable...

I don't use mine with a second monitor but there is a port on the back of that Caldigit Hub that I could plug one into if I wanted. And an unused USB-A port on the front of it. Three free USB-C cables (which could be USB-A if preferred). The white leads are all charging only, nothing to do with MacBook.

Obviously the Caldigit is plumbed in and stays at home. For travel I have a small HooToo Shuttle, which does most things I need to do on the road, but has limitations compared to the Caldigit.

Quite possibly - I’m wondering if not having to have the physical key mechanisms in that part of the case might free up enough space for a second usb c port beside the headphone jack?

I doubt it as the TB comes with its own overhead of space occupancy and power concerns esp if it has FP logon.

I do not think it was a space saving initiative but an attempt to add some new functionality

For many the rMB is a hard sell due to the high overhead of it's portable design vs features for your $ adding another poor costing feature (IMO) for some may just be adding insult to injury

Whilst there is certainly a muddle of inconsistences across the Apple range now personally I'd rather the TB be dropped more so than added

Does anyone think that Final Cut can be used to edit on this machine? For me it’s either this or the MacBook Pro with Touch Bar. I’m still yet to decide, I use my iMac currently for editing and my iPad Pro for sometimes typing and drawing, but my MacBook Pro 2011 was always used in the past for a variety of different tasks including editing, writing and so on.

Lol thanks! I stole it from the interwebz though!

Thanks for your reply.

Different topic:
Did you ever notice that the size of the opening latch kind of indentation on the MacBook air was made so that fit exactly the 5 and 5s top dimension!

Ah no, since I have an iPhone 6 and a 12'' MBR I didn't have the chance, but I reckon I love that kinda thinking about Apple design. I find my macbook and iphone quite similar when it comes to shape design!

You can definitely use Final Cut Pro on the MacBook especially on the 2017 models although there are plenty of YouTube videos were the M3 2016 models are happy using FCPX. FCPX is so well optimised that it's a pleasure to use. Premiere is a no no although that is super power greedy anyway. But certainly FCPX should run super even on 4K 60fps HEVC once we have the update.
What is it that you are planning on editing? 1080p 60fps? 4K?
For me, my new 2017 i5 512GB is my central media hub. I use it for everything and love it! It's beautiful. Super chic MacBook :)

That’s great to hear, I normally edit 1080p but in the future it may move to 4K as well.

No problem there! I edit 1080p 60fps H264 uncompressed from iPhone and buttery smooth. I'm sure that h265 4k 60fps will be optimised perfectly once FCPX is updated.

This years MacBooks are truly incredible. My favourite Mac of all time!

Final Cut does indeed seem to be getting an update later this year, i do plan on updating my iMac (which is my main desktop at home) at some point (probably next year now), what appealed to me was how portable the 12" MacBook seems which for writing seems perfect but editing video i'm not sure.

i use a mbp for logic X and FCPX, but for everything else, this is it. i love carting this thing around (backpack, nyc). i can do all sorts of work on it (writing, affinity photo, the usual surfing, email). i leave the AC adapter at home, i can work all day on the battery (i dim the screen a bit, the keyboard backlight for longer battery use).

i use crashplan (online) for backup (and regularly also backup to an external drive). so, the one port is no problem, and backing up online is 'invisible'.

my fave mac to date (and i've owned a lot of them)...

Hi, have you ever used the macbook 12 inch with FCPX? Im curious to know if that can be handled

I have the "Good" ($1299 MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2015)) and I edit 1080p 60 fps H.264 Go Pro Hero 5 footage just fine in FCPX. I'm not a professional editor by any means, but it gets the job done for simple home video edits!

But yeah, it definitely runs. Just don't expect an export to break any world records relative to other modern higher specced 2015 and later Macs.

Terrific thread. The only thing holding me back is reading conflicting advice on a hub, cable and decent 1080p screen. I'm UK based.

I'd want to sometimes use this in clamshell so need to also pick up an apple keyboard and trackpad.

Can anyone suggest a shopping list to make this happen?

I just got my Macbook 12" yesterday and love it. I am coming from an older MacBook Pro that I use in clamshell mode with a monitor and Apple Magic Keyboard and Trackpad. It's fantastic.

I'd like to achieve a docked 2017 Macbook in clamshell or using as a second screen. I just cannot workout what monitor and cable I need!!

There are several YouTube videos showing the 2016 and 2017 MacBooks handling FCPX in 4K with no problem. Benchmarks aren't everything.
4K proxy?
4K h.264 directly?
4K HEVC directly?

Luckily the 2017 MacBook does have hardware decoding for 10-bit 4K HEVC in QuickTime. The 2016 doesn't though.

Does the 16GB option help with this tho, it probably helps with Final Cut.

Looking into it all it seems like Apple created the MacBook 12” for the general consumer. The Pro is overkill for most. However do any of you recommend getting 16GB Ram or do you think 8GB is sufficient? Also is buying now a bad idea?

For most of my usage 16 GB is overkill. I only occasionally have heavy enough usage to justify using more than 8 GB, and I don't use Final Cut.

However, I bought 16 GB anyways, since this will cover my occasional heavy usage, and because I find that memory usage with OSes and applications increase as time goes on, and I tend to keep my laptops a very long time. My previous laptop was a 2 GB MacBook Pro, which I eventually upgraded to 4 GB and then to 8 GB. Even though 2 GB was very usable with it when I bought it (in 2009), it's basically unusable now with 2 GB. 4 GB is OK with light usage, but 8 GB is preferred for light usage, and a big help for moderate usage. Unfortunately, with Apple's current laptops, they are not memory upgradable, so I just spent the extra money to get 16 GB and don't have to worry about it.

I only got 256 GB though, since for my laptops I don't need that much storage. However, a lot of people might want 512 GB. (I use alot more space on my desktop, so for my iMac I have 1 TB.)
