Cultural misunderstanding I think. It's a potential career ender to be labeled a racist state side. I can understand why she was being defensive, but I think he was going over her head. Even the interviewer tried to point that out to her.

He was referring to the habit of calling people Afro-americans and not Black a euphemism the gets right up the nose of many black people.Darcus Howe is a respected journalist, editor, writer and academic he made a point which Rivers reacted to with a huge hissy fit he then truthfully said he didn't know if she was racist or not.The lady protests too much methinks.

I must go back and listen a third time ‘cause I got a different take. The guy may be respected by some, not me, but it seemed like he was deliberately using provocative language.

He was never asked whether he thought Rivers was a racist. He was asked if he had implied she was a racist, over and over again and he refused. The implication therefore is that he did intend to call Rivers a racist, which she has every right to have a huge hissy over. I think she handle herself quite well considering.

He did eventually say he hadn’t meant to call her a racist but he did so almost laughing and obviously without any sincerity.

I still say the guy is an arse, he’s happy to whine on about racism against blacks but is a racist himself. The most significant quote is that of him stating he treated white and black people differently.

Even before this he came across as having a great big chip on his shoulder and was bitching about how the director didn’t do a good job in his film and how the young generation of black kids he met didn’t respect him when he went to the rap club.

a couple of irrelevant wankers getting into an "altercation" on live tv/radio. what thrilling controversy!!!

please, show me a reason to care about these people.

Darcus came to my school last month to give us a talk. To be honest I wasn't that impressed. At first I didn't understand a word he was saying. He seemed to be a bit of a hypocrite and ofter contradicted what he had said. I also found he himself to be a mild racist, although I doubt he'd admit it.

Great bit of radio though, Darcus deserves it to be fair...
