There’s been several forums on underscreen Touch ID Apple has several patents but with all that’s going on failed to put it in this years model. Strange that the iPad would have Touch ID built into the home button and the iPhone which is vastly more popular and used doesn’t have it.
Email Tim Cook tell him you want it and why during this pandemic. Hopefully he thinks about it

With the smaller sized iPhone 12 mini, I am now on the fence. I currently have an iPhone SE1, and have been happy with it, but I also know that the SE won't last forever, and figured I would get the new SE2, even though I hate the design of the iPhone 6.

But with the iPhone 12 Mini, I would have the size and design I like, but no Touch ID.

I have no interest in Face ID, as I see the issues with it on my children's iPhones, especially lately.

Not only more popular, but also more likely to be used in settings where a mask is required. For me at least, iPads are more of a home device while the phone is used everywhere including my office, gym, cafes, etc. where I have to wear a mask. I'm shocked that it turned out this way. Makes no sense.

I'm not sure what you mean by "skipping" as there was never going to be touch id on the last few phones. I understood the se3 early next year is moving to touch id on the power button, so perhaps you should look at that option if face id isn't for you?

Still thinking. My iPhone X is working fine. I’m thinking to skip this one as I wear a mask everyday.
However, I want the photo quality but dont want to carry my cameras everywhere.

I could see apple doing the power button Touch ID on future iPhone SE, but my impression is that Face ID is the Apples advanced security method, and thus preferred over Touch ID. I see it unlikely that apple would be including this in any non-low cost phones. But I can definitely see the 3rd gen SE being an iPhone 12 mini form factor with the power button Touch ID in 2 years or so, which would allow the cost to stay low.

I'd skip if didn't have face-id. I find face much more reliable and faster and here up north taking off a glove to open phone in winter is a real pain

I’ve been skipping phones because my 6s still feels great.

I suspect it will lose support before performance becomes too slow. Apple didn’t support the 6s for the live stream. Instead, they directed me to use a different browser. Which I did. And it was flawless. Early sign of planned obsolescence.

I'll try to make it to next year's 13 editions with my SE (1. Gen)

Hopefully the iPhone 13 Mini with is a thing and comes with power button or underscreen Touch ID.
If there isn't one, I'll get the 12 Mini at a reduced price then. It's 780$ here and just too expensive + it doesn't have Touch ID

I wanted this feature because Face ID is annoying with a mask on. I was hoping Apple was building it into the on button like with the iPad Airs that were released.

Way back when biometric security was the next big thing there was a lot of talk of iris scanners. I have no idea how hard this technology is to pack into a tiny sensor, but, everything else being equal, it would seem to make more sense to pursue this technology, which makes the mask issue irrelevant, rather than trying to fit more finger print readers onto phones, which can also be a pain if you’re wearing gloves.

Either that, or we’ll all have to start shaving unique barcodes into our eyebrows.. ;)

Not gonna wait, since there is no guarantee that they will include it next year.
Don't really have a problem with selling and replacing my phone after one year, IF there is something i really want in the new one.

I've been skipping new models since the notch and lack of Touch ID, guessing it might be 2022 before we see this change. Hope they go under screen for Touch ID, power button to me seems less convenient. Not sure my 6s has many more years left before lights out 😱

I have a 6S+ and I suspect that iOS 14 will be the last support OS for the 6S series. I am planning on purchasing a 12 Pro Max this year. 5 years is a long time for a phone to be supported.

I'm still much prefer Touch ID. I sold my 8+ in favour for the XS Max at its launch.
There were many, many times Face ID has failed me because of the angles that I do it. It's even worse this year due to the masks.

I wanted to get 12 Pro Max this year. But I see it as the same as my current XS Max bar the cameras. I'll still have the Face ID problem. So I'm most likely skipping again this year. I'll just upgrade my Apple Watch instead.

Not interested in the iPhone12 series...just no compelling need. But I do think the iPhone13 will be a very-much-improved device as seems to have happened with odd-numbered models. So the plan is to wait for the iPhone14 availability and get a new then one-year-old iPhone13 at a discount. See no reason why my iPhone7 won’t last until then.

lol who told you mask situation will be faded by next year, it will be the norm for the years to come.

Just speculation. Didn't mean to turn this into a pol thread.

Just saying, who knows what the climate will be like this time next year. You're talking about a year out from now.

I think Apple is going to aim for screen embedded touchID or nothing at all. That may be a lofty goal to hit for 2021.

the touchID power button on Air4 is just a stop gap measure / cost saving measure possibly too to keep the tablet at $599 instead of $799 on Pro 11"

I'm just talking about science and statistics, not trying to be political too, just realistic based on how countries handle the situation.

with the way that's going now, 6 months to 1 year from now doesnt seem to be the earliest when more first world countries are going back to zero even after improvements, much worse to those third world countries and just countries that have big population in general.

back to the iPad Air touchID

usually when there's a NEW feature, Apple spent R&D for that and they want to maximize that

they wont be stopping to have such feature which they spent on to be exclusive on 1 model, so most likely they have to put it on other products like the iPhone.
