Hi Guys.

Contemplating using my iPhone 8 Plus without the leather case.

Hoping to hear some horror stories to persuade me otherwise.

Thanks:D

The leather case new might actually be more slippery than the phone.

It definitely is. The glass backs on the 8/X adds a nice amount of grip to the phones compared to the aluminum backs on the 6/S/7. The leather case is about as slippery as the 6/S/7, if not more.

It gets better with wear but takes time. My 9 day-old Apple leather case is improved but still slippery.

Thats reassuring I guess guys, It hasnt been too slippery for myself so far.

It does hide the beauty of the back though... and the back feels so good..

Using the X naked is impossible for me, constantly slides off my couch, bed, etc. I've used EVERY iPhone since the original naked through the Matte Black 7 Plus. I can't deal with the X sliding all over, I'd like to go naked, it does feel good in the hand ;)

I prefer to use my phone without cases. Mainly because it has less bulk in my pocket when I carry it and I have not really had an issue dropping any iPhones. I do think the glass backing does help with the grip in your hand, at least from my experience.

I nearly cracked mine, but I didn’t.

I was at a Big Bash League game, Perth Scorchers vs Sydney Sixers at the WACA, and thought I lost my iPhone X.

So I quickly went back to my seat and luckily it was still there. It slid down from my seat onto the concrete floor. But despite using mine naked there wasn’t a scratch on it.

I’m sorry I wish I could tell you it’s fragile and will smash, but that would be a lie as it isn’t.

I had more than one iPhone before the X. I did not use any case of them, apart from the 6... That design is extremely slippery! It kept sliding around in my car while driving.
The X feels way less slippery, but it depends on the surface you are putting it on: in the hands, or on a leather seat/couch, it will stay nicely put. On fabrics... well, it will slide a lot.
I did not drop it yet, and I hope it is not going to happen any soon. I would recommend a case though, since the SS band scratches easily (on the silver model, at least).

Unless youre a call center professional or bed ridden you will drop phones. Every single one of them. Glass will crack. It’s a dumb material choice.

No you don’t. Serious you don’t. I’ve have mobile phones since the late 1980s on once had to repair it for a screen crack because I dropped it. Once in nearly 30 years. I gladly take my chances.

I found that my X would slip off of things, and would wander around on hard surfaces when it vibrated for new messages or emails. The leather case helped with that a lot.

Glass isn't a great choice but on the 4 and 4S it was a simple and cheap replacement. With the 8 and X there are camera parts (apparently) that are essentially integral with the back, making it a costly and relatively difficult replacement.

Exactly ^ Depending on which case I use my phone slides off the couch, the passenger car seat when I drive, etc. I could never go naked myself.

Generally curious, if glass is a dumb material choice, then why are some smart phone manufacturers migrating towards this with wireless charging capabilities? How do you propose wireless charging function without having a glass backing due to the restrictions with aluminum/metal?

Ok (posted this on another thread back when it happened), but the OP asked.

Day 13...bent over to look under my vehicle and it slid out of my shirt pocket (which I very rarely do as it's asking to have your phone slide out), fell about 2 1/2' onto the concrete floor in the parking garage.

We're what? Two+ months in now? Still rocking it naked unless I'm going somewhere that's high risk / people would ask to handle it (then it's in the Apple black silicone case so they don't ask) :) The replacement phone is still flawless. (yes, I used one of my 2 AC+ incidents).

Semi-OT but I used to carry my phone(s) in my shirt pocket. I had so many suicidal phone dives that I finally got the message and don't do that any more. YMMV, of course! :)-|

Heh...yeah....I knew better, but wasn't thinking that day. Didn't even feel it slide...only heard that awful noise of it landing not-so-nicely on the concrete.

Really don't get the guys that throw these things 30 feet and there's no damage. Heh. Not my experience at all.

Well, some years back I was walking on a brick sidewalk in Beacon Hill (Boston). I dropped a Space Gray 5, which went skateboarding down the bricks for five feet or so before it stopped (and it had fallen from waist height to land on the bricks in the first place). Two small nicks in the band, and no damage to the display. Once in a lifetime...

The thing about the X and the 8 is that the glass is SO slippery. I have my phones on silent/vibrate and if they're not in a case I sometimes find them quite far away from where I left them on a table or counter. I've learned to put them on a high-friction surface if they're not in a case of some kind (Apple leather case works great for this purpose).

I'm neither and haven't dropped a phone since my first smartphone in 2005. I go through about 2 phones a year and when I sell them they are pristine.

I'm sorry, but its better to be safe than sorry. Use something, especially with these new phones. The 4 and 4S were much different in construction. Just my opinion.
