Apple would rather you buy a watch, which will illuminate when it senses movement (such as tapping the nightstand) during the night. 😎
I found that worked a lot better when I had a rickety, wobbly nightstand. I now have an incredibly heavy and solid nightstand, and I have to hit it harder than I’d like to get the watch to turn on. Ended up getting an Echo Show, though, so I no longer have to wake up with bloody knuckles.

How can you hate a feature that can be turned off?

Simple, if you’re an iOS user that’s been wanting to have AOD on your iPhone but don’t like the implementation then that’s a reason to be bummed. Hate is a strong word this is just a phone and feature but you can be bummed because it’s not implemented as well as you thought it would be.

Lol. Not all upgrades are an improvement! 🤣

Put a penny under one foot of the new nightstand and see if you don’t improve things. 😎

You can also just apply a black wallpaper to the Lock Screen which will give you an Android like AOD and further improve battery life
Yup, that’s what I did and that’s what a lot of YouTubers did.

The letters are still kind of bright, but then passersby can see the screen and know you have the latest greatest iPhone - always that! 🤣

I don’t hate it, I just find it useless since I already have an Apple Watch with this feature. I turned it off the moment I received the iPhone.

You can also change the text color to a shade of gray instead of white, thus dimming them to your taste.

Nice!

Didn’t see that until I dove into the settings. I can’t seem to get a dimmer grey without colour - but I’ll go into photoshop later and enter the colour code I like as it looks like you can do that.

Thanks as that is actually helpful!

If you go to the Sliders tab you can just enter the same numbers for the three channels. 255 is full brightness. ~230 would be about a 90% gray. (and for anyone who didn't already know, the six digit color code is just the three channel values in hexadecimal)

Glad this was helpful.
