For those that like an Iced Coffee or Latte, try this at home. It's really quick, less time than stopping and waiting at the coffee shop. I make one almost every morning, takes 1 minute to make, 1 minute to clean-up! It tastes better than any one you can buy...oh and it's CHEAP!

Homemade Iced Latte
  • 1 tbsp. freeze dried instant coffee (I use 2-3 myself)
  • 1 1/2 c. cold milk, white or chocolate (I mix both)
  • 1 tsp. vanilla AGAVE syrup (can be found in health food section, other flavors available)
  • Ice cubes
  • Pour into a jelly jar, seal, shake for ten seconds, and enjoy! You can also blend with ice to make a frozen latte.

AGAVE syrup is a natural sweetener that isn't sugar-based and is 3 times sweeter, so you don't need a lot. It's also low cal compared to regular sweeteners, so this can be a great drink if you're on a diet. If you can't find vanilla (there is plain) you can get a sugar-free vanilla coffee syrup and add a tbsp. of that as well. I like mine stronger, so I bought instant espresso too and go 1 tbsp. each coffee and espresso.

SAVINGS:
If you were to buy an Iced Latte 5 days a week for a year...
$4 @ Starbucks = $1040
$2 @ McDonalds = $520
$0.40 @ HOMEMADE = $104

Anyway, give it a try and hope you enjoy! :D

I love coffee, though I don't think I am an addict. There are many days that go by that I don't have a cup of joe, certainly during the summer when I usually want a coke when I get up in the morning.

You're absolutely right.

However, I still don't mind pay the $3 because, for me, I usually go in a coffee shop with my Mac and chill for a few hours (It's a Grind, not Starbucks. Free WiFi ftw). But then again, I also don't go in more than 3 times a week (usually 2).

I'm sorry, did you just say, and I'm quoting, "freeze-dried instant coffee"?

I just bought a pound of Starbucks Gazebo blend... that's the best I've had in ages. Strong, aromatic, full-bodied. Yum!

yeah while that iced coffee sounds really good the instant coffee puts me right off.

get some expresso coffee from the supermarket and make a french press or expresso and use that. it would taste SOOO much better… and youd get a bigger caffeine hit ;)

Believe it or not....yes. There are a few good quality freeze dried coffees on the market, but agree that they are not anywhere as good as fresh ground & brewed. By no means is this a replacement for "quality coffee" drinks. I still buy my Caribou/Starbucks/Dunn Brothers coffees. It does taste very close to some $4 iced blended coffees and hands down way better than McDonalds or gas station fare. This recipe is for those that buy McDonalds iced coffees, when you need a quick fix or a cool treat. It's a "candy-coffee" like a milkshake. I still get my hot, dark roast for the morning and the iced coffee goes in the fridge for the afternoon.

If you have the time, agreed.

I was skeptical myself, but it really isn't as bad as you'd think. Remember, this is a blended latte-style drink. It's mainly milk with sweetener and coffee. For roughly 40 cents, you get a quick iced latte that tastes better than the McDonalds drink and almost as good as SB Frappuccino.

^ yeh exactly we have a really popular drink here called Farmer's Union Ice Coffee that uses instant coffee and is really nice but i just love the flavour and aroma of espresso coffee… i might just make one now :)

I like a cup now and then, but I don't drink it everyday. I like it with plenty of milk and sugar. Mmmm....

I love drinking coffee, but since I started working as a barista I have pretty high standards now so I only buy it from places that make a decent latte.

Did you know that most iced tea served at restaurants is 97-99% caffeine free?

Always check before you order it...if you're not sure, double check before you order...esp. if you need your daily fix.
Actually, I did not know that, but I'm not too worried about getting a caffeine fix. I've already been addicted to caffeine once, I don't intend to rekindle the addiction. I try to limit myself to 1-2 caffeinated beverages per day (generally tea, I try not to drink coffee or sodas).

Has anyone tried Frisco?...I was at my sister in law's house, and she didn't have coffee...so she asked if I would be interested in trying this.

It's a South African coffee-like drink...I rather liked it. It could never replace my favorite cup of coffee, but it was nice.

Just curious if anyone knows anything more on it? :D
