A question directed to previous aluminum owners.

I've always fancied the SS and now the Titanium but I always come back to Aluminum since Series 1. I never had a problem with the screen micro scratching and the aluminum cleans itself (owned a SB SS which I had to constantly clean...I'm a neat freak).

And knowing how these "gadgets" are updated yearly, I don't see the point spending a lot more.

I ordered the Aluminum SB Cellular Series 5...how about you?

Started with an aluminum (aluminium) Series 4 and upgraded to a stainless steel Series 4.

In hindsight I don’t regret the decision. The only drawback of anything “better” than aluminum is that the increased cost / spending more yearly doesn’t make sense for frequent upgraders.

For this reason I’m sticking with the S4 SS until it breaks or AppleCare+ runs out and then reselling to upgrade.

i've had two aluminum models rose gold s2 and gold s3 but for the s5 i decided to go stainless steel because i really want the hermes watch faces. i see myself keeping that for at least 2 years no matter how sick the next update is

I bought a SS when the Watch came out. Spending so much made me hold onto it, especially once I realized how atrocious the resale value is on the non-Aluminum models... but I still spent more than I needed to this time. Figured since I keep them 4+ years I can justify it to myself.

I am upgrading from a SS series 0 38 mm to a aluminum 44 mm. I just couldn’t warrant the price difference again

I had the original AW and last month I sold it on eBay. Next month I plan on getting the 5. Can’t decide which. I had aluminum first time. Now can’t decide. I am tempted to get 44mm and maybe do aluminum. Or just go big and get SS44. I will have it for few years or give it to my wife if something I absolutely need comes out. She currently has AW 3

I don’t understand why anyone would buy the aluminum Apple watch. It looks cheap and the screen scratches if you breathe next to it.

In fairness, I’ve seen scratches on the sapphire but it’s so much more durable and it actually looks and feel likes a real watch.

I upgrade every year. Aluminum only but I was tempted by the titanium & ceramic this year. No problem with scratches. I might go with the fancier material but I like the grey/black ones, not the metallic, and they all look similar. If I kept them longer, maybe.

The watch IS a fun cheap toy. If I want something heavy duty (& more expensive than my car) for a special occasion I'll wear a mechanical watch, but they're not as fun :) I end up missing my Apple watch.

This has not been my experience and I’ve owned both the S0 and S3. I’ve accidentally hit my watch against hard surfaces numerous times and see no scratches or discernible damage.

I personally think the watch has always looked “cheap” and bland in all the different models. The strap is the only significant distinguishing feature imo. For me, it’s a tech device and certainly not a fashion item so it makes no sense to pay more without a performance difference. I plan on updating every other year until the processor/battery performance reaches a level that I’m fully satisfied with.

for the first time probably not. If I buy this time I think I’m going titanium

I upgrade often so I can’t see myself needing longer lasting or more expensive metals. I am sticking to aluminum for 5.

My thoughts exactly. I sell and upgrade every year and the Aluminum retains more resale value than the SS. Apple is not really giving me a good reason to keep my watch for another year, but if they start a two-year upgrade cycle, I will spring for the the SS or Titanium...but I don't think that'll happen.

There's always a new feature that entice me to upgrade. Last year was the bigger screen, this year is the "always on" and so and so forth.

Oh and I sold my Series 4 Aluminum Cellular for C$500 this year...not too shabby, is it?

I'm getting aluminum still. I understand the personal value of it but seeing the market value of a SS drop below an aluminum later in the same annual release cycle is unnerving.

I actually prefer the aluminum watch because of the lighter weight. I've upgraded annually and can't justify the higher priced watches. My series 0 was stainless and while the crystal was fine, the case had multiple scratches. I've never had a scratch on the aluminum watches.

I wear my aluminum watch everyday and never had a scratch on the screen, or on the aluminum casing. Sure it’ll have a few nicks that aren’t visible to the naked eye, that’s called normal wear and tear. My $400 aluminum watch will do everything that an $800 titanium watch, and even a $1300 ceramic watch will do. Does it look cheap to me? No, but I’m not the kind of guy who wears a watch as a fashion statement.

First time Apple Watch buyer here facing the same decision (just not “again”). It’s down to Aluminum vs. Titanium, the latter of which I’ve already preordered. The lighter weight watches suit me better. I don’t need cellular but find some value in the unique hue of the standard titanium model, and the sapphire screen is a big selling point to me (I’m OCD about scratches). But it’s double the freaking cost of an aluminum GPS model. The watch is still a young enough product to where we’re seeing substantial updates more frequently than iPhone, not so much year over year now but every two years, absolutely. Feels like the iPhone 5 era or so for watches. Point being, I’d hate to get an expensive AW 5 only to have an awesome 6 come out in a year and make my $850 titanium model a $110 trade in value. I’ll get the 6 I just know it, so logic tells me to go aluminum this time around, but damn that titanium looks good.

Good point. Let me tell you though that the IonX glass on the Aluminums are not very scratch prone that some people might think. My past Aluminums stayed micro-scratch free for a year of use each.

Appreciate that. As far as the aluminum cases go, is one color more prone to showing scratches? As in would minor scratches blend in on silver better than space grey? Thanks again.

Very good post, most people should go aluminum, and I really wish the aluminum was stronger. I am not talking about the casing, but the screen. I have alway gone Stainless Steel with the sapphire display, but I bought an aluminum Nike to track my sleep. All I can say is the Aluminum watch had many scratches on the screen, but the SS model had nothing

The Nike watch tracks sleep? I thought the watches didn’t do that yet?

You need some higher thread count sheets!

All jokes aside, I hope they eventually standardize the screen and tighten the price range somewhat. I’d pay more for aluminum GPS with sapphire.

I’m getting another aluminium. The £399 price tag makes sense for a watch with a short life to me. I had good last time but thinking silver this time. I’ve heard the space grey chips and shows damage more obviously. Fancying the Nike series this time too.
