I of course will go and see the movie even though I did not read the book. I don't really like it much when people compaire the movie to the book. IMO a movie and a book serve two different purposes and should be treated separate from each other.

I didn't realize he is in this movie...I may just see it then. I've been a fan of his ever since Leon.

Yup, he plays Bezu Fache ;)

I'll admit, I don't read many books but I really enjoyed the Da Vinci Code. It's probably that I don't read much that I didn't find the plot predictable. I found it such a pageturner that I read it in 5days, staying up until 8am one night to get through the last 200pages :)

I enjoyed DaVinci Code, but liked the precursor, Angels & Demons, more. DC was basically a fairly blatant rehash of the Angels plot structure.
Certainly, neither is the the best book ever written, but they were decent enough page turners. Sometimes that's all I'm looking for in a book.

Tom Hanks is a suspect choice. He is more the "everyman" kind of guy, not really a strong fit for the role. From the first 10 pages of Angels, it was clear to me that Dan Brown saw Harrison Ford as Robert Langdon, and also that the Langdon character is a romanticized version of who Mr. Brown would like to think he is. And isn't.

Reno is perfect for Fache. I have hopes for the movie being interesting, aat least visually.

I haven't read the book, mainly because of the industry that has grown up around it. Yeah, that's as stupid as those who hate the iPod "because everyone else has one", but I haven't read any critics who actually like Dan Brown's writing style.

I do have a weakness for the kind of plot involving an alternative history that dovetails seamlessly into our own, but anything like this has to stand up against Umberto Eco's "Foucault's Pendulum" or Neal Stephenson's "Cryptonomicon" and "Quicksilver". If anyone tells me "The Da Vinci Code" is as fascinating as any of them, I'll read it and go to the movie.

Hell, I might just read it anyway so I'll know if it's crap or not.

Think of the Da Vinci Code as being one of the books mocked in Foucault's Pendulum. In terms of the technical level, its between the Harry Potter books and say a Tom Clancy novel. Something good to read while the TV is on.

I was annoyed when I first found out that this book was being turned into a movie (although I wasn't surprised) because I HATED the book - it was the worst waste of time ever. Plus, I really like Audrey Tatou (or however you spell her name).

But then I realized something: I hate it when they turn a book into a movie because they invariably cut out something I think is important, or change something to the plot... and I can't think of a single way in which this movie (with its cast/director/etc) can be worse than the book, so it might actually be entertaining.

Me, 'cept for the fact it has Tom Hanks in it. I really can't stand him, nor his accent/voice. He's just not the right actor for the job IMO.

AGREED.
I always thought of robert lagdon being a skinny blonde guy kind of like the CNN journalist Nic roberts.

BUT I'M SO FREAKING EXICTED!!! The book was amazing, and the movie looks just as good!!

I thought the book was really good. Sure, Dan Brown isn't the next Charles Dickens, but most writers aren't.

I couldn't put it down... Seems like a good book to me.

I completely agree. At one point everyone I knew seemed to be asking me if I'd read it, and each time made me not want to read it even more. My sister once told me to call her back later because she was in the middle of watching a DVC commercial-disguised-as-a-documentary at the time.

Having never read it, I don't have an opinion on how good the book is. But the impression I've gotten (and it could be a false one) is that it's especially loved by people who don't read many novels. I think I'd probably rent the movie at home someday, assuming I don't get talked into seeing it in the theater on a date or something.

I know many, many crazed novel readers that also read The Da Vinci Code, and most of them thought it was very good.

When separated into its component parts I found it has other uses:
  • Spliff paper
  • Fire lighter
  • Drawer liner
But since the book was utter crap the best use of it would be as Toilet paper.
