Redjericho,

After AT&T started the "Unlimited Data" plan they realized that they were not making enough money at it, so they decided to end it. However, they had a considerable number of people signed up for it and they couldn't just drop them. So they said that if you were on the plan already you could keep it. but if for any reason you left the plan you couldn't come back or restart it.

To be "Grandfathered" into any program means that you were in it before, say, certain changes were made, or maybe the plan or program was ended and you can continue to use the old rules or keep the plan. You are "Grandfathered" into it.

AT&T only offered unlimited data for two months after the iPad 1 was released. So it was a tight window to gain unlimited data for life (or until AT&T decides to pull the VZW trick and cut us off). Which was ironic, since the "unlimited data" pre-paid plan (only pay for it the month you need it) was one of the slides at the keynote speech.

Little bonus present for us early adopters!

I was surprised that AT&T didn't eliminate this with the iPad 3, since the jump from 3G->4G changed the data plan, and thus they had grounds to not allow those of us grandfathered to make the jump to iPad 3.

who says big corporations don't have souls?
