People need to stop complaining because Apple did not launch a computer just for their specific needs. Please see below points:

  • If you need more processing power use a MacBook Pro.
  • If you need light and portable with some ports use a MacBook Air.
  • If you need light and portable without ports use a MacBook Retina.

...

You are just comparing stuff based on their functionalities, not on prices, which is a thing that matters more than you expect.
Also I think some people is complaining not about new MB, but because this "kill the ports to go thin" stuff will become the rule soon in the other Apple laptops, to then: "you need ports? buy an adapter" even in MBP's. And please, don't use the superdrive example, it's not the same as a universal bus used for many things.

Who is the new Macbook geared towards? Someone like me. Someone who values the portability. I suspect that many of the Macbook purchasers will have another Mac for the heavy lifting and larger screen size.

It's aimed at the person dumb enough to drop $1300 on what is basically an iPad running OSX. Oh wait, I think my iPad Air 2 is faster.

So you've already spent well over $2k on a 15 rMBP but it's too heavy, so now you need to spend another $1300 on another laptop? $3500 on what should be taken care of in ONE laptop. Apple loves people like this!

Either that or spending to buy a tablet.

The new MB is far more usable as an every day machine for utility purposes on the go than any tablet. It's not really even close. Quite a bit more expensive, yes; but you can be far more productive on a machine like that than on ipad or an android tablet.

I will be using mine for development. I know people will groan and moan about me using it for that purpose but that's what I plan to do with it. If I just needed a browser an iPad suits that use case just fine.

I honestly do not understand why people find this to be such a hard question.

If you are a user that values portability and uses the computer for Office, mail, web browsing and the occasional movie plus music this computer has it all.

For such a user (that I represent) you either buy a MBA that is slightly less portable, with a worse screen but cheaper than the new MB that is more portable, with a retina screen but at a price premium. Both computers have all the power you need to support the functions you use it for.

My gripe with this thread and others is that some of you seem to find it very hard to understand that such a user like myself exists. Believe me - it is the bulk of current MBA users. The purchase decision boils down to price vs portability and screen quality.

No, it's geared towards people who wanted the thinness of an Air with a retina screen.

This is the Retina Air, but better.

3 points all readers should be aware of regarding the strategy of the new macbook:

1) the fact that there is so much controversy over this machine already in its first week of announcement means Apple has succeeded in creating just the buzz they need to sell it.

2) iPad sales have been on the steady decline the past few years and the Macbook is just the product debut they need to whet iPad demographic buyers' pallets.

2a) iPhone is the best selling Apple product and for those buyers, the macbook is a step deeper into the Apple quicksand.

3) all computing is going wireless whether you like it or not and Apple is challenging you to make yourself evaluate whether you really require ports vs. connecting to devices wirelessly or is it just a mental crutch. ("think different?)

The product yet to be released is a wild success already and Apple knows you will come along for the ride. Maybe one of their smartest moves yet.

That's a lovely sound on it fan boy but apple haven't sold any of them yet therefore it is not a wild success yet. Likewise controversy does not equal a buzz or success. Contra very over the prices, lack of ports, lack or a decent web cam etc means people are unhappy with what apple js offering. And much like the original air, people vote with their wallets, and apple will realise there mistakes and update their failings.

Also the MacBook isnt priced cheap enough for iPhone users to just walk in and decide to go the apple route. Certainly not in Australia. If anything that would be the airs role in the apple world, or the mac mini.

for those that are waiting for price drops, how long are we talking here and about how much.

about a year? about 100-200 less when ver. 2 drops?

That sounds about right. I expect that it could be sooner than a year. I bet we will see a change in 6 months when Skylake is released.
