I have had a 17" Asus V2 which is very similar to the 17" MBP. Asus was the ODM for the MBP after all. After a while, it just because too unwieldly to carry it around constantly, so i kept going down in size all the way to a Vaio 11.1".

I think it depends on what you want out of a laptop that determines the screen size. If you only lug around your laptop once in a bluemoon, sure the extra screen real estate is very nice. I like to lug mine around in my bag and regardless of how thin it is, the screen size is too big. If they had a high res MBP in a 13, that would be the perfect laptop.

Too much.

I do not regret my 15 at all. We have a 17 in my household, and although it is a very nice machine, is about as mobile as an iMac. It sits on the kitchen table all day, and goes away at dinner time. It is cool, superior to the iMac as far, but I think that is slightly far fetched to consider is portable, unless you dont mind carrying $3500+ in a backpack.

The hardware specifications on the new one is amazing, it looks great and all the like. I do not know if I would ever purchase one. For the price difference, you could get yourself a well configured 15 and an external 24" display (non apple) for 'desktop-like' usage.

im running a 2.8GHz 15inch. The processor bump to 2.93 would be virtually unnoticeable to me and whilst 8GB ram would be nice, 4GB does me fine and once the firmware restriction is lifted on the 15inch models im putting another 4gb in. So on that basis im not regretting getting my 15inch in the slightest.

Sure a better resolution would be nice, but 17inch to me defeats the point of a laptop, its simply too big, so you may as well go for a desktop. Im gonna save my money for a nice 22 inch monitor and then i shall be a happy chappy would a beast of a mbp and a glorious display to run it through when at home.
Who are you trying to convince, us or yourself?

The Dream Machine!

The matte version with the with the gray border is OFF THE HOOK!!!!!!! Check out the picture...I'm a graduate student and bought a early 2008 15" MBP with a massive discount and could sell it for what I have in it and buy one of these. I'm thinking seriously about it as I write at my desk at school but rarely take out a computer during class as presentation are sent out later anyway. I'm also a Apple shareholder, for the LIFE of me, and I don't want to start up a Matte/Glossy debate is why Apple does not offer this version in the 15"? All the analysts are saying that sales have slowed in the desktop/laptop units during the last 3 months. Is Apple so arrogant that they feel they can dictate what we want? I wanted a new 15" in matte, it didn't come out, so I bought a old version. I was willing to pay more for a new matte version. In my view, this caused Apple to lose a sale as I bought a closeout that someone else could have bought if I had bought a new one - I just don't understand this. To me, this looks like a rare misstep on Steve's part. I predict that the ratio of glossy/matte's sold on this 17" will be about 1/1 and Apple will soon recognize their mistake and resolve this by summer.

I'm glad that I didnt wait. Only thing the 17" mbp has that I want is the ability to address 8gb of ram.

New 17" w/7200 RPM Drive

does anyone know if the 7200 RPM option for a unibody MBP causes vibration problems?

M

My GF owns a matte MBP and I own a new 15" I can say hands down the glossy is better for me.

Rather than relying what may or may not be a vocal minority I would like to see the hard sales numbers on the two screen choices.

Regardless, they will probably offer matte as an option on the 15" in the next rev. That production process on the 15 may not have been ready in time for MW.

If you decide to sell your early 2008 15" mbp depending on the model, 2.4ghz probably can score $1100 or the 2.5ghz around $1400, that would still make you pay any where from $1600-$1930 to upgrade to the lowest ghz 17" mbp.

Don't regret it.
I like the ability to have 8 GB RAM, but it just costs too much for me. Anyway, I'm fine with 4GB although I do video/audio editing and use a lot of programs that use a lot of RAM. I don't need to use those programs at the same time, so I don't really need 8GB. A 300-400$ Quad Core CPU would have convinced me, though.:D

I have a hitachi travelstar 7k200 (7200 rpm) hdd in my unibody mbp and it causes no such vibrations.

Infact all 7200rpm hdd's use just about the same amount of power + heat as the 5400rpm, thats how great technology has become these days.

Anyways, I'm selling my hitachi travelstar 7k200 soon as I'm waiting for my intel x25-m to arrive any hour now. :p

Yea I agree wit you. 4gb of ram is plenty for a notebook and especially when 8gb of ram cost $1200.

Instead, I am upgrading my hdd to the intel x25-m SSD drive, which should arrive any hour now. If anything the hdd has been the bottleneck all these years and upgrading cpu/gpu right now isnt going to get as much increase in performance.

I cant wait!!

Swap to 17"

I only paid $1200 for my 2.4 MBP, I can get $1150 out of Craig's list no problem, plus I get a student discount that is bigger than 10% from the University Of California Irvine computer store, they always have great deals - I would not lose any money and would just be paying for the 17". The SCREAMER deal right now at the computer store is an early 2008 15" MBP, 2.53 GHZ, for $1199....

I'm not envious of the size ;) I'm envious of the resolution, battery, and RAM capacity. I hope the 15'' can get an update to address more then 6gb for future proofing it some. I can live with the resolution that I currently have, but 1920x1600 would be nice...guess I'll just have to hook it up to my external or my 60'' TV. Oh well :D

I already owned the 17" 2.6ghz hi res led backlit mbp, just 6-7 months ago.

If real estate is of concern, a 24" display at 1920x1200 cant be beat.

But if you really need the screen real estate on the go then the 17" hi res mbp is what you would want.

The 17" hi res will take a while to get used to but once you do get used to it, it is very much doable. But doable doesnt mean its comfortable.

If you like to sit at a desk at home at a respectable distance away from the mbp when it is sitting on top of your desk and while your on your comfy chair then the 17" hi res isnt for you.

When I had the 17" hi res mbp I always had to lean towards the mbp so that I can see and read whats on the screen and could never really just sit on my chair comfortably at a respectable distance.

And I remember I sure used the control + scroll (to zoom in and out) alot. At first I remember I had to squint alot sometimes causing headaches but you get used to that as well.

Not me. I'm happy with my 15" MBP. I do wish Apple would allow the upgrade to iLife 09 at the $9.95 since I only had my MBP less than 2 weeks when it was announced. Oh well. I can do without for now if they don't change it.

Nah, I own a laptop that is 17 inch and it's just too big and unwieldy. 15inch is a much better size for me. It would be nice to have that long lasting battery though.

You don't own a MacBook Pro or Powerbook 17". Yes, PC laptops are big and unwieldy, but Macs are completely portable. I call mine the 17" iPod.

No regrets with the 15". I've had several 17" and 15" models. The 17" just doesn't cut it for laptop (meaning not on a desk) use. I found I was the using the MBP mostly in this situation so I moved from a 17" hi-res 2.6GHz to the 15" unibody 2.8GHz/SSD. Finest laptop I've ever had so far.

Where is this deal????

A lot of people have been quoting this $1199 deal and I can't find it. Need to get a machine for video editing Final Cut Studio 2 and 17 is too big to take on the train every week. Anyone know??

I was set on waiting for the 17", but a friend put it to me this way:

"You can get the 15" for more portability and have it now, and with the money you save you can get the 24" LED-backlit ACD, and it'll end up costing you the same."

Which is what I did, and I couldn't be happier. I've never been in a situation where I needed more than the 4 hours of battery life I get now, and I can't see myself needing the extra battery life or the advantage of all the other increased specs. I mean, I can upgrade the RAM and HDD later if I need to, and if I get to the point where it's maxed out and I still need more, than I'll spring for a Mac Pro and use the MBP for the basics.

But to each his own.

17's just a little to large. I'm happy with the 15 but wish I could get a higher res out of it.

I do wish I could get 1920x1200 on the MBP to match the ACD, but oh well (there's no way I'm decreasing the res on the ACD).

17" is large...

But the 256GB SSD option is really eating me out...why can't the 15" have that??? Is it possible to buy a 256GB one later and manually change the hard drives?

Also, the three USB ports would be nice...considering I use an external USB soundcard, external keyboard (which uses two USB ports) and mouse...which can easily be done...the question is whether two USB ports have enough power...
