The Cubes are awesome...I wish Apple would bring them back in Intel-form

Same here, I wish that Apple would come out with another Cube. A midrange "tower" with dedicated graphics and limited expandability. :)

My little cube is getting alot of use.. Doing adobe stuff and torrenting.. azraeus sucks on the mini.. then again most things suck on this mini.. If i can find 3 512MB sticks of ram ill up the cube to 1.5gb and drop in a G4 1.2 upgrade and use that until i can afford a MacPro and sell the mini. I had a couple friends over last night and the one saw the cube and i swear he creamed his pants..

I've kept my eye open for one as a second desktop...but the resale is a bit to strong for me to just pick one up as a toy.

The design is so well executed though - Apple could re-release the Cube as a new Intel machine and the design would still look fresh.

I love my Cube, I really do, but since the MBP, I haven't been using it as much... I still use it occasionally - if I can get WiFi happier downstairs, I'd move it next to the TV and use it as a media server. I also use it for the rare time I need to boot into 9 (usually to install summat, eg, Quake 3)

I can't believe I'm late to this party! Proud owner of a Cube since Sept 06.

When I first saw it way back when, I liked the design but hated the fact it was made by Apple. (Yes, I can admit that I was once blinded by the all mighty M$FT). Once I switched 2 years ago, I knew I had to fulfill my destiny and purchase said Cube.

Love the little guy, I use him as a file server. I wanna max the RAM, get a new HD, and drop a Superdrive in there. I'm too lazy to do the processor upgrade.

BTW, does anybody know if an AirPort Extreme (802.11g) could be put in the Cube? I did a little research and so far it's pointing towards no.

Wow that seems really cheap, there really expensive here in the UK, the cube is the most beautiful computer i've ever seen and i'd love apple to bring it back with a nice C2D inside, if that happened i'd camp outside the local apple store to buy one, apple did say in a press release that it may come back, but if the mini is the cubes replacement, i think i going to go an be physically sick

Hey all. I'm new to the forums and thought I'd chime in with my Cube story.

I was given a Cube about a month ago. It's a 450MHz with 1.2 gigs of ram. It was given to me by my father-in-law (a PC user) who had it given to him by the original owner who thought he could fix it. My father-in-law had it on his bench for 2 years and never had a chance to look at it. By that time the original owner had purchased a new computer so he no longer had any use for the Cube (tragic!) and didn't want it back. When my father-in-law was packing up for a move he asked me if I wanted it so I decided to try and see if I could fix it up.

I've never used a Mac before but thought it would be fun to have and, as a web designer, learn the OS and also test my stuff on it. A friend determined that it needed a new DVD drive and a hard drive. I purchased a used DVD drive off eBay and a new 80 gig HD for it. I then read through some tutorials on-line as to how to replace them both. I got it working and it now has OS X 10.3 on it but no fancy 15" Cinema display or anything. It's hooked up to my old 19" CRT. I'm actually looking for those cool HK speakers to go with it.

It's really pretty cool and its what made me decide to purchase a 24" iMac which is currently on its way to me from California. I should have it sometime on Monday.

I owned a Cube until just recently....

I purchased one last year off eBay for around $175. It was someone's display machine kept in a glass case at their "mom and pop" Mac store that was going out of business.

I upgraded it to 1.25GB of RAM and put an 80GB drive in it that I had lying around the house from an old PC. Put OS X 10.4 on it and found a USB audio adapter for about $10 that let me use regular PC speakers with it.

I thought it was a very cool hardware design. (The whole thing with the metal handle you press down on to make it slowly slide up, so you can grab it to pull the "core" of the machine out of the bottom of the case is awesome.)

Initially, I intended to resell it to a good friend of mine who needed to upgrade from an old Pentium 2 running Windows ME (ick!). But they ended up inheriting a Toshiba laptop when their dad passed away.

So I played with the idea of hot-rodding it further, but decided that was way too costly. (The CPU upgrades for Cubes are way overpriced, in my opinion - as are superdrive dual-layer DVD burners for them. And video card upgrades for Cubes are still such hack-jobs, 99% of the time. You can re-flash a decent PC card but then you're stuck with no usable mounting bracket to screw it down into the Cube enclosure.) So I sold it to another friend of mine, who uses it today as his home business computer with Quicken, Office, etc.

Where did you find the USB adapter? Is there a brand name? I'd like to find one so I can use the cube as a media center.

luv me cube

the 1rst mac I owned was a performa and then I saw the cube and it was love at first sight. I didn't think the upgraded cpu was overpriced and have no problem with the vid card even though only one side is screwed in. I also updated the cd drive and all for less than getting a mac mini. it's my main and only puter and has never skipped a beat. I do have the hots for the 24 iMac but might think about it more after it's updated and if the bang doesn't equal the buck, the cube will do just fine. will also have to wait and see about how the cube will handle 10.5.
and if anyone is interested in seeing what some other people have done to a cube try
