I have the exact same thing as you: a 3G 20 GB iPod and wanted a shuffle. I wanted it for its music capabilities, but also as a USB flash drive.

I got the 1 GB version, and it is SO worth it. First of all, I allocated 50 MB for files and let the rest of the 950 MB for music. It is awesome. I have all my favorite CDs preloaded and then autofill fills the "gaps." I discovered so much music.

Once you get your shuffle, hear the amazing quality and feel how light it is, you will want that as your primary iPod.

I use it walking, at the gym, on the bus, everywhere. 12 hours of battery life is advertised, but thats not the case. It has been, for me, over 17 hours of play - I got it in Mid-April and never charged it yet (not even from the box - it comes fully charged) I'm listening to it right now.

The 20 GB is great but the shuffle is so much easier - just flip a switch and its on! And, I just flip the same switch and its off, I dont have to wait 3 seconds holding down the play/pause button which sometimes doesnt work.

GET THE SHUFFLE.

I have the 1GB shuffle as well as a 40GB iPod. I use the shuffle for the gym and going out when I want a minimum of stuff in my pocket. All other times, I use the 40GB iPod. I have just got too used to having most of my music with me, and being able to choose what I want without having to load it back up again. If I had to choose just one it would definitely be the regular iPod.

Haha, me too! I've heard a lot of songs I didn't know I had. Sometimes it makes me wish my shuffle had a screen, so I could see what song it it.

Thats it! Im getting me a Shuffle!

Thanks for your replies I really appreciate it. As soon as I get enough money I will get the 1GB model.

I just read in a mac world mag from last month that the Shuffle has this cool feature when you can import stuff onto it at a lower bittrate on the fly! How cool is that!!!

Thanks again

You have to admire apple's business model that cultivates such desire.

It boggles the mind. People owning more than one ipod based on the difference in physical size. .

I don't see why it is crazy- people buy jam boxes for the garage, bedroom, all of different sizes and all of those are portable. There are people who own both a PS2 and a PSP or a Nintendo Gamecube and a game boy- both portable to some extent but used differently. It is brilliant to say the least that apple didn't sit on its laurels and make just one size fits all. Some may use a large iPod instead of an external hard drive and the shuffle as a flash- both very good uses not to mention different uses for music...iPod for car and shuffle for workout, etc. I would love to buy an iPod instead of a CD changer for my car and a shuffle for working out so if I drop it I don't have to worry about screwing up the iPod hard drive, etc.

Anyway, many uses for each style- definately not just a size difference~!

I guess size does matter, but function matters just as much in this case

Ive got both.. Use my 512MB iPod Shuffle for running and my 15GB 3G iPod for walking/car trips so i dont kill the hard drive from all the shock it would take when running.. already had a few iPods die from running.

Wonderful setup if you ask me.

I have found pretty inventive ways to incorporate my 512 shuffle and 6G mini into my daily life...as like others I am one who kicks myself if I buy technology and do not use it.

I purchased a keychain adapter for my shuffle and use a cassette deck adapter to plug it into my car stereo when I am just driving around town. I use my ipod mini for long drips and plain flights...where a screen is a must! Knocking around campus I do like my shuffle cause it is so freekin light, but my ipod mini really comes in handy when I want to listen to some new albums or songs I have downloaded, plus I dig the calendar feature.

In all I thought I would use the shuffle more for the gym, but with an armband my mini works so well, and I can just select from several exercise play list versus having to constantly skip tracks that are less motivating when I am running or lifting weights.

Both work really well for there individual uses.

I can almost add my name to this list... new iPod ordered and on the way, Shuffle in my bag. Think the Shuffle will be used for the daily commute, the iPod for more extended trips & weekends.

Looking forward to it immensely.

i have an ipod photo so no need for the little guy unless i need a bigger jump drive :)

I've got a 15gb iPod and a 1Gb Shuffle. I'm finding I use the Shuffle more, espcially doing more physical things like gardening, painting, cleaning etc.
The iPod is now for long journeys or holidays. If I were you I'd definately buy a shuffle, sounds like it would suit your lifestyle perfectly.

I bought a 3G 40GB in October 2003, then added the 1GB shuffle in early February, then last month added a 1st gen 60GB photo to the mix. I usually have the shuffle with me at all times loaded with about 210 songs, leaving space for files. Can't beat it for convenience, though I do love having 5000 songs with me on the 40GB (lots of Apple Lossless and .wav files). The 60GB photo is used mainly for recording class lectures at the moment since the battery life is so much longer than my 40GB. For my needs, I can't see the use of a mini, though I see a ton more of those now.

I can't wait for the next gen 80GB and beyond. I have 12,000 songs and everything I've imported in the last year has been Lossless so they take up a ton of space.

I have both a 15 gig and a 1 gig shuffle. I use the 15 to take in thecar and have a nice mount for it. The Shuffle is for mobility. Its really nice to refresh/charge every few days and toss in a pocket and have handy when I have downtime.

Its a nice device.

As for having both, they fill totally different needs/niches.

Yeah - why not have both!

Yep, I have a 20 Gb iPod and a 1Gb shuffle. I use the iPod to back up all my tunes from the 3 Mac's I have. I also use it as a firewire disk as well. The iPod comes with me in the car and I play it through the radio with the Griffin iTrip.

The shuffle is a beautiful piece of hardware. I have allocated the dataspace 50/50 and I change the songs via autofill weekly. The data portion contains some documents I use as templates so, considering it comes to work every day, I always have my documents with me and they can be accessed by any computer with a USB port. Oh yeah, the main reason for the shuffle is to listen to tunes on the train - much easier to carry than the iPod and if dropped, it will have a better chance of still working ;).

I do admit, having 2 iPods is not essential, it is more a luxury. If you are the type of person that likes to buy new gadgets from time to time, the shuffle will meet your expectations!!

I would definately get the 1Gb shuffle. It is perfect for transferring volumes up around the 640Mb --> 700Mb mark..... ;)

My friend, this is what I do. I use my 1 GB shuffle for working out, mowing the lawn/shoveling the snow (pending on the season).... believe me I still use my iPod. If you do indeed buy a shuffle then you will use it for a while just because of the fact that you bought a new nifty gadget but I'm certain that you won't forget about the ol faithful (iPod that is)

I am out of town often and to determine whether I bring my iPod 20GB is upon the basis of the duration of my trip. A 1 to 4 day trip calls for my 512MB Shuffle and in excess of that requires my 20GB. If I am taking a plane for more than 3 hours I also bring along the 20GB. In normal cases I actually bring both along.

The Shuffle is Great! The 20 gig offers a slew of advanced features from the Shuffle. But in the end, I would recommend a Shuffle over a 20 gig.

got them both, lo9ve them both. the 20GB iPod's role has changed alot since I got the shuffle though, I tend to use it only in the car with my iTrip, whereas I use the shuffle for walking, running, around the yard, etc.
