I love multiquote. :D

At least you have just about the fastest dialup you can get! If your phonelines suck you could have half that performance or worse.

The dorms at school are crazy even with DSL at home...I've had Mac OS X updates download at 3 megabytes/second before. :)
Yeah. It's been creepy lately. It's like AT&T is saying, "Well, you can't have DSL, but you can have better phone lines." ;) I never used to get these speeds before lately though. Odd.

I feel your pain...I really do. I live out in the sticks, and for years our only option was dial-up. That was slow and painful. Then we got DirecWay. That was annoying, what with the limits and all (when I downloaded updates after clean installing my computer, I would have to download one update, then wait a day, download the next one, and so on and so forth). Then we got wireless, and while it isn't nearly as fast as I would like, it is still better than the alternatives. It's relatively cheap (something like $40 a month) and has very few problems with downtime.

If I were you, I would definately look into wireless as a possible solution to your woes...
Yeah, our wireless company is $40month for 768k/down and up. $40 for a synchronous connection isn't that bad in my book. And soon I'll have a job so my parents can split the bill with me (they'd be paying only $10 more a month).

I'm still using dial-up at my parents house. I don't really mind it as I don't visit any flash/video/uTube sites.

I am pretty easy going when it comes to downloading an iTunes song. I have the patience.

Also, there is free high speed wireless at my local Community College (I did graduate from there ;)

Why I have never bothered my parents in getting something faster was the overall cost per month from some companies.
I visit all the flashy sites, and I load them, but I have to wait about 30 minutes. But I'm usually IM'ing people as well, so it kills the time.

I used to P2P when I first got a PC, but when I discovered iTunes was much faster at downloading songs (15 minutes vs. 2 hours) I switched to the legal side.

Props to Apple for giving me a reason to download legally. :D

My dial-up connection just means I frequent the local internet-enabled coffee shop more often than I otherwise would, and spend longer periods of time there when I do go.

Dial-up can be hell. When I lived in rural New York we were too poor to afford rr or dsl so we had to get dial-up. Through the university I worked at it was only $6 a month so we couldn't pass up that deal even though the connection was painfully slow. It got even worse over time as websites got bigger and our download times got longer. My parents are still on dial-up and have a connection about half as fast as yours, so things could be worse.

I still had dialup when in rural Austria where I live part-time, and hated it -- but just like in your situation, there weren't any affordable high speed options available.

Now, wireless HSDPA (via PC Express card, USB modem, or wireless router; from mobile phone provider) has finally come down in price and you can get 3GB of data for 20 Euro or 20GB for 50 Euro/month at 7.2 MB/s, with the equipment free with a 2-yr contract.

I signed up 3 months ago and am using the PC Express card in my MacBook Pro, and it's working great both indoors and outside.

I don't even remember the last time I used dial-up. 7 years ago maybe?

I too know people without internet. Then again, they could get if they wanted to.

Oh and I read the whole thing. Sounds like AT&T being themselves. Sorry to hear of your situation buddy! Hopefully AT&T pulls their act together and stops lying to you. Did you ever have to pay for the equipment or service?

Man i haven't dial up since cable came out. thats was a WHILE ago, my buddy still has dial up and he is talking about getting isdn heheheheheh

Oh yes. They better pull their act together. We never had to pay for the equipment or service, but I'm assuming that you only are forced to pay when the actual service starts, not when they ship it to you. I almost thought about filing a claim with the BBB for false advertisement, but on another board, I was flamed to death.

I was sort of looking into ISDN, but then I looked just a tiny into it and it was like Pandora's Box. All the damn fees that they force you with. Having to go from analog to digital lines, having special filters, plus at least $80/month for the ISDN access even though it may not be unlimited, ugh. It just never stops.
