Problem solved....
Hello all...first thanks for all of the interest and help, this is truly a great site. Well I've got my gigs back, most of them anyway. It was the Jumper setting or lack of one really.
I had the jumper set as a slave (per direction in Maxtor and Apple's documentation). However, Maxtor's tech info (online) pointed to possibility of this limiting drive space, and suggested that NO JUMPER may be needed. Finally had a few moments to give it a shot, removed the jumper and rebooted.....and.....38.2gb
Thats about what I would expect it to be, and is right in line with the whole 1000 vs. 1024 thing (considering formatting etc). Those of you who mentioned similar problems in this thread may wish to investigate (trying no jumper or changing it's position) you could have some extra drive space just waiting to be filled. Manufacturers web sites should have info, I apologize but I neglected to note the exact location of Maxtors info (basically hit the support page and searched for "40gb +missing gb").
