How should Apple use their treasure-chest full of cash to improve the iPhone/ other products as a whole? Steve has said that they have 'big' things in mind, but I highly doubt it to be HP or Sony. What do you guys think? Why? :apple:

They'll continue to buy up smaller companies with very good ideas. I don't see anything as big as a Sony or Hp happening in the next 5 years.

That's a very interesting question, maybe a company like Dragon (I believe that's their name) that does speech-to-text so they could implement that without having to design it from scratch.

Forgot to add: they could also hire individual people (like they did with Palm). This would be harder to come across, but it's another thing to consider.

I don't see why would Apple buy a PC company like HP. It would make more sense to buy a company who already works with/for Apple, such as Toshiba but I still doubt it. Buying smaller companies just to improve one thing (e.g. displays) is something I can see Apple doing, I think they have even done it already.

As for products, I'm sure Apple is and will be spending a lot money on stuff like multi-touch

I think that they should start paying a dividend to their shareholders.

    :D

I know they probably wouldn't buy HP, but I wish they would've purchased Palm. Is there any likely candidates?

Apple's corporate strategy seems to be innovation and penetrating the market. In that sense, if Jobs continues with that end in mind, buying up small companies that can aid in R&D will make sense. Acquiring companies that supply also makes sense (less costs for inputs and more control over inputs).

I doubt HP would sell though. :p. Why should they? Despite the rise of Acer and Lenovo, and Dell still being a major player, HP is the number one world PC maker. It doesn't make sense for the shareholders of HP to sell in that position. A move into the PC market can make sense though, if they bought up a smaller player in the industry, like Toshiba or Asus.

And shut them down. And not do anything with their technology.

    Lala, anyone?

    Maybe, but I doubt it.

Apple does something with every company they buy. If they didn't, why would they have done it in the first place? Give them time. You'll see. :)

    Netflix would make sense.

But they'll just continue to buy companies that have good ideas that it would be cheaper for them to purchase than to develop their own alternatives for (i.e. Netflix).

Then why does Steve keep hinting at a much larger acquisition? Explain that one.

I believe they bought a speech recognition company called Siri, and also someone else already.

I'd doubt they'd buy anyone big, they seem to like buying the smaller companies. I think they like to keep the cash around rather than take a risk and make a large investment.

This is what I personally don't want to happen. Competition is good, Apple must not become an 'almost' monopoly for streaming movies, there must remain a few 'large' players.

True. I think Redbox and Blockbuster will be gone in a few years, anyway.

Smaller companies are really where the great ideas are born. If you have the money, buy it, even if you don't use it for ten years.

Why would they buy Dropbox when they have Mobile Me? It has storage space available! Right? :)
