Much greener pastures
With all of us cloistered like this, we're all obviously missing some of the people we love.

Usually we babysit two of our grandsons after school, so we're missing them. We see them on FaceTime, but it's not the same as hugging them or having my older one sit on the couch next to me saying, "Grandpa, do you have any more scary Night Gallery stories I can watch?" 🤗

We did stop at their house one nice day just to say hello, and my wife instinctively went for the "Let me give you a hug" move. When one grandson started to come closer, my son-in-law and I both turned into scolds: "Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah!" And they stopped.

I still see my mom when I drop off her share of our curbside grocery pickup. But boy, do I miss the grandkids.

No one.

Which sounds cold, but not if you know our situation.

My wife and I are latchkey kids. We are both used to being alone. For the most part, this whole stay at home thing has been right up our alley. Not having to go anywhere or be anywhere is a default choice for us.

Both our kids went on spring break at the same time and then the stay at home orders happened so they've been right here with us.

My dad died in November so he missed all this. My mom has had family friends helping out since that date, including my sister's boyfriend - so they just kind of stuck around. She lives in California. There's a reason we moved one state away to Arizona 20 years ago.

My wife's family is in Georgia. Haven't seen my sister-in-law in over 20 years. My wife just spoke to her on the phone yesterday.

I'm sure my kids miss their school friends, but my son attends a tech high school so is constantly in touch with his group. They just rolled through a semester's pile of schoolwork together just to get it out of the way. My daughter sees her classmates on Zoom.

My parents had me late so any aunts and uncles and cousins are either 10-20 years older than I am or 10-30 years younger. Consequently, no real attachments to any of them as I didn't know any of them growing up. No one to miss.

Wish I could say different, but I'm right here with the person I married 23 years ago and my two kids so I'm not missing anybody.

Not easy to pick one person:
Grandkids (2) and their parents (son #2) - had an airline trip planned in March that we didn't take
Mother-in-law - last of her generation on either side of the family, had a driving trip planned... see above
People at our church
Extended family that we see 2-3 times a year

At least we still get to see our son (#1) and have Skype.

My sister. We live 90 miles apart and most often communicate via mail w/ photos of stuff we're working on (she's a quilter too), but sometimes she and I and one of our brothers, who lives about 50 miles west of me, just all down tools and decide on spur of moment to have lunch together in a little village diner about 40 miles northwest of my place.

So as a central meeting place, it works out great if we show up near end of regular lunch hour, the places closes at 2 but we tip way big and the waitstaff and owners don't mind if we hang out and schmooze while they're cleaning up and doing prep for the following morning.

I miss that whole experience! And, uh... the bacon at that diner.

Which item I don't keep in my pantry because I'd have it gone in a couple days if I did ever bring it home. Just bailed out of the bacon thread in these forums, because I started thinking way too much about bacon and eggs, BLTs, extra bacon on the side... arggggghhhh!

Missing the other side of my family that I don't live with.

I'm still working Mon-Fri with limited staff. So we all miss working alongside @TwoH who is a member here. He's in our iMac department and is the life and soul of our technical department so we're all missing him a lot while he's on furlough!

I'm missing my other half who I haven't seen for about 7 weeks (and counting).

I also miss @TwoH and his dry smile and colourful choice of language! iMac dept is a loss without him!

Well, I've been down to my parent's house a couple times to help them with some things. Even though she lives close, I didn't see my sister a whole lot other than occasional family gatherings. My brother and his family live on the other side of the state so it's been all FaceTime with them.

The one person I'm missing the most - the girl that cuts my hair lol. I'm just glad all my hats are adjustable, hopefully they can adjust large enough...

I hear you. I trimmed above my ears today when I shaved. But its going to need something a little more drastic soon!

I'm home with my two favorite, most important, loves of my life, so I'm in a reasonably happy place :)

Beyond that, we have another family who are our best friends, we travel/boat/etc., with them, at least we get to see them regularly via video, but it would be fun to sit on the deck and drink a beer together.

Get some clippers, buzz it off. ;)

I was talking to a buddy last weekend, apparently hair clippers are as rare to find as TP, Lysol wipes and hand sanitizer have been...

My mom found one to buy to use on my dad's hair, but he hasn't had a cut since early Feb. It's only been 2 months for me. I'm definitely doubling the tip for my hair girl when the barber shop can finally open. For now, I'm trimming as much as needed around my ears (well, really my right ear) so I can more comfortably use the BT headset for phone calls for work.

Yeah, you're totally right, back a couple of weeks ago when I mentioned clippers, I was going to link out to some options (on Amazon) and they were pretty much out of stock, every model, brand ...

It's the hair-pocalypse ! o_O

I’m not missing anyone because we (wife and I) don’t live close by to any family, so we don’t them on a regular basis anyway.

I'm mostly like this, but one thing I do miss are the quick conversations with the pastors and other churchgoers at church. It's not the same going to a drive in or watching on TV. To me it's pointless to even go to the drive in if you can watch on TV since you can't interact with anyone there.

Also miss being able to actually go in a restaurant and interact with a server, and eat right after being served at a table instead of eating in the car or taking it home and having it get cold.

Oh, I hear that. Our favorite restaurant is Longhorn, but each of the two that are nearest us are 15 minutes away...plenty of time for food to get cold before you even get home.

...Not that they'd probably have any beef right now anyway... 😒

15 minutes away
Yeah, 10 minutes is about my max for going to pick up and bring home, anything further will be delivery and probably pizza at that. Unfortunately, that significantly limits my options as there are many in that radius but only a few are actually open (and it feels like they want to kiss you because you brought them business when you walk in to pick up). I noted in another thread that I'm doing my best to support truly local restaurants with the money I'm saving on gas by not driving as much, but even if I expanded to select chains I still don't have many in that 10 minute radius. Another challenge is that those that ARE open are often open for limited hours so when I want to grab lunch to go (as I do once a week) my options are even more limited.

Needless to say, I have a couple places that I'm becoming a regular at. Something else I'm doing that I don't normally do is leave a tip on those pickup orders. I'm fortunate to be working a full schedule from home AND have reduced expenses, these folks are working fewer hours than normal, putting themselves at risk and still have to be away from home for that work, I can at least give them a little something extra.

My grandparents; they normally head back up north around this time and spend the summer in their cabin.

It's a weird setup; up until a few years ago, it didn't have running water or electricity, but now it has both and even WiFi. The ten people in my mom's immediate family usually visit them on the weekends for a few hours of catching up, swimming, and camp-fire-cooked meals.

They're doing alright down in Florida and are self-isolating, so it's nowhere near as tragic as people realizing they might've seen infirmed relatives for the last time. I still miss them, though.

I’d say my dad. He’s getting a bit older and having some health issues. So knowing he is more susceptible and I am in a potentially “dirty” environment on a daily basis has kept me away. I did send him my old iPad so we have been face timing which is fun. It’s quite entertaining to watch him.

Yea no steakhouses close enough here either. The closest two restaurants with curbside near us are Applebee's and Copperhead.
