I think I’m going to opt in to Applecare+ w theft and loss for this $1400 phone. I typically buy a new one every year so at $15/mo I’ll spend $180 to get damage coverage, theft and loss. Considering what it costs to replace a screen alone (and how many I’ve fixed over the years) I think good insurance. If I break a screen, it will save at least $100 with the $29 deductible. It can be cancelled at any time. If you pay full price in advance, you’ve got 2 years of coverage for $300 (save $60 vs the payment plan at 24 months).

Applecare is a waste of money. I never use a case and have never broken a phone. If it breaks I'll just buy a new one. I've saved thousands of dollars on not buying this stuff in the past 10 years.

iPhone XS max tradein is $600 and the x is $400. That’s how much your phone will be worth in one and two years respectively. AppleCare plus ain’t worth it. Better off using that money to buy a new phone if broken. Deductible for lost phone is $267 so your total expense is close to $600. Highway robbery if you asks me.

Thanks -- a lot of people just talk about the deductible, but don't factor in the original cost of the AppleCare.

Also exactly, buying this much insurance for a quickly depreciating item is pointless.

Just because it worked out for you, doesn’t mean it will for others.

It’s insurance. Sometimes it pays off, sometimes not. The nice thing about the monthly plan is the protection in the first year. The phone will still have a high residual value after 12 months. If you break a screen early, you’re saving a lot. A new phone is going to cost you $289 is lost or stolen. That’s a big savings. The most I’ll spend is $180 plus any deductibles.

People should take advantage of their credit card benefits for free. For example if you buy it with American Express, if it's broken/lost in the first 120 days they will fix or replace it for free. It also extends the warranty by 1 additional year.

On the payment plan you’re only out what you’ve spent to date. You can make your claim and cancel after clipping your investment after one loss if you choose.

I’ve owned 13 iPhones and never lost one or repaired one because of manufacturers defect; broken screens, water damage, left in an airport etc... Plus what has happened to my wife and kids phones over the years. Same thing.
