If something goes wrong after the warranty is up, hardly anything is replaceable. Potentially worrisome for getting 5 years of use out of it. I am currently on the fence due to this.

The only things that are easily replaceable in the old shape are the RAM and HDD so it's not really a huge difference. It's not like you could easily replace your CPU, GPU or motherboard on the old model. With AppleCare I have piece of mind for 3 years and I will probably replace the computer in two years anyway, if something compelling comes along.

I have a macbook air 11" 1.6ghz, 128SSD with 4GB of ram at the moment and I only use my laptop to surf the web, listen to music, watch videos, a bit of world/excel/power point and that it is
I plan on using the new macbook pro to play games (BF3, COD MW, Crysis, Halo) , and run maybe 1 windows VM.
I think 8gb with 2.3ghz should be enough, also I don't plan on keeping it for the next 3 years, so can you confirm?

Thanks!

I can't even imaging how much faster 16 gigs would feel compared to 8. I use logic, ableton live, final cut pro, adobe products, parallels/vmware etc on a late 2008 core 2 duo with 4 gigs and although the lag kind of sucks, it's still not that bad. Would I even feel a difference with the 16 compared to the 8?

Remember you will be running Mountain Lion in a month and then expecting to keep laptop for three years and run three more yearly OS updates after Mountain Lion. So you are guessing at performance FOUR operating systems from now.

Spend the $200 on RAM.

Good point. That is probably the logic I will convince myself with too! Just seems like RAM can go bad often. (Though I've never had it happen, so maybe I should just give them my money now!)

Just wanted to say I ordered the base configuration with 16GB as well. It seems like that may have been one of the most popular models, and thus may have take longer to ship (It is also the model Gizmodo recommended)

Yeah, looking by how many people go for 16GB, Apple needs to have them in stock, and not bto!!! :):):)
I would have it by now if 16GB was a standard option...now I have to wait 3-4 weeks...

Well dear friends, I decided to wait until ML. Can't really sit and wait for 3-4 weeks and check tracking every 3 minutes after the order LOL:):):). Hopefully then BTO base 16GB will be in stock and delivered in several days :):):):)
What do you guys think? Especially after the fact that I don't urgently need a new computer until September....

You get 110 dollars off the warranty as a student... I highly recommend it especially with all these proprietary soldered parts.

Sean isn't haswell the best processor architecture of all time? I'm still running my haswell computer and it smokes skylake. You were right when you said all we needed was the power of the haswell! How did you make such an astute observation? was it all your experience in designing cpus?
