I made a few mistakes when purchasing the 13” Macbook Pro to use in tandem with an iMac video editing setup when on the go.

iMac (2019)
8 Core CPU
Vega 48 + 5700 XT eGPU
8GB RAM upgraded to 40GB RAM
1TB SSD + 2TB SSD (external) + 14TB RAID 1 HDDs

Macbook Pro 13” (Base Model)
4 Core CPU: Sufficient
Integrated Graphics: Sufficient (but leaves some to be desired)
8GB RAM: Insufficient
128GB SSD: Insufficient

I’m buying a 14” as soon as it’s released.

Macbook Pro (14”)
Base CPU
Better Graphics (Maybe)
16GB RAM Minimum
1TB SSD Minimum

Main uses: Portable video edits without lugging an external SSD around + light boot camp and virtualization use to play Civilization III (still the best game ever created) + teleprompting via Notes

Will also buy one. Just base + 16gb of ram.

I’m an engineering student so mostly light duty use, but occasional W10 VM for Civil3D and a few other programs or matlab use. Need more than 8gb of ram for VM use and keeping a ton of PDF textbooks open, etc. Had a 16” but it’s overkill for anything I did except for handbrake. Offloading that to the homelab machine.

I'm waiting to get one of the new machines too. Looking to replace a late 2013 13" with 8/256 by a 14" 32/1TB model. The new CPU should have at least 4 cores with hyperthreading, preferably 6 or 8 cores. I'm the operations manager of a TV station and I do lots of testing of IT setups in VMs. And Microsoft Teams as well as Skype for Business are bringing my current machine to its knees...

You won’t see 8/6 on 28w this gen, still on 45+w.

Former electrical engineering student here. Matlab hits a little too close to home.

Nice. 🤙🏼

What’re your use cases? What configuration are you getting?

(Just wondering.)

I’m a designer and iOS developer. I’m looking to spec this one up, at least 16GB with 1TB, unsure about the processor though.

honestly not sure when we’ll get a 14 inch at this point :(

Even if there’s a cooling redesign?
If Intel doesn't make 'em at 28W, then there will not be 6/8 core in the 13" MBP. The whole laptop including the cooling solution is designed for 28W. I said I'd prefer 6/8 core, but I don't expect it despite pressure from AMD. Intel may launch a handicaped 6 core but it'll run at a bazillion watts in reality when doing any work at all.

Why don't you just buy a 2015 15in mbp with 1 tb storage and 16gb ram for under $1000 on eBay or amazon?

They do have a 15-watt 1.1GHz Comet Lake 6-core U chip and most reviews show it doesn't perform great on single-core compared to Ice Lake. Dell used it in their 2019 XPS 13" but replaced it with a higher-clocked Ice Lake 4-core chip for the 2020 version. Tiger Lake will also be 4c/8t as well, but at much higher clock speeds.

Pretty superficial reasons to be honest - preferring a newer, lighter, thinner machine. This is my first time with a 13" MBP after a lifetime of using a 15" and it's a night and day difference to me. (That's a good point imo and I might compromise on the superficial reasons).

Edit: Also a fan of the newer IO, I've moved over to using a CalDigit TS3 and plugging everything into a single port for two monitors, all of the storage (SSD + RAID 1 HDDs), microphone, charging is magical

Didn't set out to promote YT videos but this is relevant (here's an example) -
