No, that's the standard wording for the 3.5" drive trays that come with the Mac Pros. I imagine Apple will only give you an SSD adapter if you buy an SSD from them direct.

Well that's just bullcrap.

Apple might make a 2.5" sled for the MP, TransIntl has them.

...and how is that different to what I said?

Apple will make custom SSD sleds. They will only ship with a system if you BTO an SSD at purchase (and you'll get one per SSD), and they'll be available as overpriced add-ons from the online store (ie: SSD + tray).

Why wouldn't apple just use one of the new 3.5" SSD drives that is already on the market via OEM? No need to use 2.5" drives.

Just order my SSD

Just ordered an OCZ colossus LT 128 Go since it is a 3.5" and we are having problems getting the OWC in Europe (Customs + guarantee). Order plan for the new Mac Pro on Monday next week.
For me, 128 Go is sufficient as a boot drive and I will use a 1/2TB drive for the time being for storage. Once the prices have gone done for the SSD, I will consider adding extra 512 ot 1TB SSD.

If I plan to get the new Mac Pro, I'm going to just stick an intel 80GB SSD g2 in it in the first drive for boot purposes and just stick 2TB HDD in the rest 3 HDD bays.

If you have an empty optical bay, you should put the SSD in there and have all 4 bays. Also, OWC SSDs are much faster.

I tried to stick a Colossus into my MP1,1 with 10.5 but it would not work (OS would not recognize it existed).

When the 1,1 died recently I bought a 4,1 and put an OCZ Agility 2 (240 GB) into the lower ODD space and it has more than enough space to use as both an OSX boot and a Win7 boot drive.

While lots of people have personal favorites, Anandtech appears to be the best resource for current information regarding performance.

In the market for a 2010 mac pro, and will buy an ssd but not from apple. Will make my decision when the intel g3 ssd will hit the market. Most likely end of this year.

That's what I am waiting for too. They are supposed to have a 600GB model and prices should come down across the board.

SSDs are getting so fast Apple is gonna need to implement SATA III in the next MPs with Sandybridge. OWC SSDs already almost max out SATA II and I'm sure that Intel will try and be better than OWC which would mean it will need to be SATA III. And if they bring the prices down, it will put pressure on other SSD vendors to bring theirs down as well.

I am EAGERLY awaiting Intel's G3 SSDs with great anticipation. I may just hold off getting an SSD until that time. Hopefully sometime before the end of the year.

Enjoy your wait while the rest of use enjoy our fast SSD's.

Thanks, have fun! :)

Edit: On a more serious note, not all people here share the same financial position, so unfortunately for someone as pressed for funds as I am, patience is just a neccessity I must deal with in picking and choosing my hardware more carefully than others here on these forums. Ah well..

Not sure about the OWC brand SSDs but I read an article on the Intel G2 SSD that its new algorithm is so efficient that it only shows a maximum of 5% degradation over the long period usage and this is without the use of garbage collection or TRIM. This is what has sold me on the intel SSD but I'm not too sure if this is true for the OWC SSDs.

I'm kind of weary of buying the OWC as its not a big company compared to Intel.

I'm sure the OWC runs a bit faster but I look at the long term reliability where I have my money on the Intels.

Yea this is the reason that I only bought the 80GB Intel G2 SSD. Once the G3 is released I'm sure the prices will be a bit better in terms of GB/$. I'd love to grab a Intel 256GB SSD G3.

Nice, yea see, that's what I'm thinking of doing as well, at the very least. That's the lowest I'd go for an SSD at the moment while I wait for G3, and while resisting on splurging almost $400-$600 for something higher.

Temporarily, of course.

Btw, are you (or can you) just use the supplied 3.5" adapter that comes with the X-25m to mount it perfectly in the Mac Pro? Or do you still have to go something like Icy Dock? I'm actually thinking about purchase an 80GB today and wanted to know this before I went ahead...

SSD prices are still ridiculously high, but you can't blame Apple. I would go with 1 SSD for OS and mechanical for everything else.

They are likely to remain high for a while. From what I can gather, mass production is not yet possible on a scale to get prices down. I ordered on from OCZ and they told me "The flash necessary for this capacity (480GB) is somewhat scarce right now."

They could maybe mass produce slower SSD drives, which you might start seeing, but if I'm going to pay way more than a normal drive to begin with, I might as well go for the best performance period. And I agree, storage drives stay mechanical for the foreseeable future.

I plan on buying the OWC Mercury 200GB SSD. The only regret I have about the new Mac Pro is that it is only SATA-II. That's not a problem for today's SSDs but it will be in a couple of years if one wants a newer and faster SSD that will likely saturate the SATA-II bus.
