I'm in the market. I would like to compare it to the new new Mac Pro that apple said are developing with upgradable parts

I was actually planning to buy an MS Surface Studio - but this has me rethinking that, as the hardware looks massively better on the iMac.

However, why the heck isn't Apple embracing touch screen and say the ability to use the Apple Pencil on the Imac?

Also, a December ship? I mean that is around 6 months away at best estimate - which means the schedule could slip. Curious why Apple announced something so far from being ready to go.

Probably not - mainly due to my 5K iMac is fine for what I do. But I am glad it's available for those who can make use of it and I hope it sells well so as to remind Apple that better performance across the line can equal better sales.

I'm in the same boat, the updated 5k iMac with the 580 GPU is calling my name and I'm sure the regular iMac will get Vega next year. I also don't really have a use for 128GB of ram anytime soon. My work load is more GPU heavy then CPU heavy so I don't really need a 8+ core Xeon even tho it would be nice.

I would really like the space gray option most of all.

I can't wait anymore, I have been waiting since freaking 2015 basically..
i probably regret my purchase, but i will enjoy my regret

Not going to be in the market for the iMac Pro myself, but I would buy the dark keyboard/mouse/trackpad. I'm assuming/hoping that Apple will sell these separately whenever the machines start shipping...need a new keyboard and such for the office, and the black would look way classier than the white.

I'm honestly surprised they've not done black keyboards to go with the iMac before, going back to the very first aluminum model. The black glass backing really didn't go well with a white keyboard, and MAN do the white ones show dirt over time.

I'm definitely getting the iMac Pro, but I wish it was out a little bit faster than December. Which probably means availability will be a couple of months after.
I'm on a late 2012 all maxed iMac. It's not bad but I definitely wouldn't object getting a new machine in my hands!

With the projects for this year falling through, I won't be able to afford or justify the pro, but it's .. what i want.
I will settle for the imac 2017 edition and pretend the PERFECT in my eyes imac pro doesn't exist.
It has exactly the hardware I could only wish for, and that dark color is just so pretty.. I wish i could justify 5000, which means 6000 euro probably.. 6k will let me change my life, i can't live with myself knowing i spent that for personal use on a computer.. and i wont be using it professionally enough to earn it back.

I am torn.
But I will buy the imac 2017 edition high end model with the money i have saved up thanks to saving for two years. and that is still a bload of money that i wish i could buy other things with. But at least it pushes me closer to that professional position where maybe in teh future i could justify and afford the iMac pro.

Maybe i should marry a rich woman or win the lotto or rob a bank.

If it was 3500 to 4000, and avialable now, i would have taken a loan with my parents and pay it off over a year, the extra 1000 i miss. but 2000 .. or more .. i mean 5k for entry level .. i duno, i just wouldn't be able to sleep at night knowing i spent that much on a system..

struggling to pay the bills, and having a new system once every decade, .. knowing what is ahead of me in my future, and without having to disclose everything to everybody or owing anybody a f explanation.. just pls take me for my word that i honestly feel that system is made for ppl like me, but i am in the type of life where it's not a reality for me.

i will just buy the other rediculously overpriced machine - at least they released one, after two years.. ffs.

Don't worry, dude: I feel your pain. Be patient, you can still get it - at the refurb store!! There will always be refurbs.

I closed my eyes and pressed the button after drying my tears..

I just bought the 5k iMac 2017 .. 3600 euro almost.

Congrats on your new computer! I bought a new computer even though Skylake-X is around the corner, no worries. If you need a computer now, you need it now - no sense waiting imo. iMacs have good resale value anyway.

What I would be interested in knowing is with the iMac Pro launching six months down the road, how close will its launch be to the new Mac Pro? It would suck to buy the iMac Pro only to have the Mac Pro show up 4 months later.

really curious about the specked-out imacpro cost
any guessestimations?

18core xeon, 128gb ddr4 ecc ram, 4tb ssd, radeon pro vega 64/16gb hbm2 mem | $18k?

It's a poor investment, will become obsolete in no time, no user up-gradables. I will NOT even consider to buy it. This machine is not PRO!

No, do NOT regret You made a fine decision. iMacs as we know till now are fine computers. But iMac Pro will be hugely overpriced in relation to its specs. If you are after 10,18-core wait for Mac Pro ( if we assume that we see one and is user-upgradable-friedly), or built Hacintosh.

The new Mac Pro is supposedly going to be upgradable. But this iMac Pro doesn't look like it will be at all.

I predict the iMac Pro will be another nMP boondoggle.

i9 seems to be a panic response to AMD.. linus tech groups etc were all kinda wondering and worried about it..

This machine is right up my alley for Capture One Pro. 8 cores, crazy GPU, fast flash drive, can squeeze in 64GB of RAM.

But... it's not perfect. I'd prefer to have a pair of flash drives, not one. The fact it's not upgradeable by the user at all, not even the ram, is an epic fail. ...then they throw a $5,000 USD price tag on it and factor in another $1,500 to upgrade to 64GB of ram...

I can't wait around for the modular Mac Pro, as we have no idea when that thing will ever get announced, much less released. And even if it does come out in early 2018, it's likely going to start at $6,000 (a premium price for some aspects being user upgradeable.

The 2017 iMac doesn't interest me. It's a moderate bump over the 2015 - we've been waiting two years for this? Kabylake processors are going to be a generation behind at the end of June.

It's been a good 35 year run with Apple for me.

I toyed with the idea for a few minutes but Xeon, ECC memory and not a single piece of software I use can utilize 11 teraflop GPU brought me back to reality.

The close as I could probably get would be gaming (bootcamp) but even then most Xeon's low base clock will bottleneck a 11 teraflop GPU in most modern games plus the bootcamp drivers will likely be lackluster.

I would mostly like to see an iMac with i7 and Vega.

Nothing to be worried about with the Skylake X. Lots of needless drama. Cherry pick what you need, and go with it. I don't need a 10+ core CPU, nor 40+ PCIe lanes - but 6-8 cores is the sweet spot for me. The fact they're meant for workstations and meant for overclocking, damn, I'm loving what I'm seeing. And the motherboards? 3-5 M.2 slots? Are you kidding? That's freaking nuts. LOL

I'll give Ryzen another cycle to prove itself workstation ready for client work. I really hope AMD can pull it off, and push Intel to innovate again.

The day of the user upgrades is rapidly drawing to a close? Why?

Over 97% of Mac buyers never upgrade their Macs from the date of purchase, and that even includes the operating system. Why did we upgrade in the old days?

Remember the 10,000rpm drives that were not much faster than the 7200's, increased memory, faster graphics etc. You can now just order what you want. My decision will be based on what my shares bring in as dividends early next year if I am stilling on the perch nearing 80.

Specific work stations. No ECC memory support isn't a big deal but without quicksync the i9 is out for me. A lot of the motherboards at this point are rushed. Gigabyte couldn't get thunderbolt 3 certified in time. And I'm definitely not liking the native RAID support if it's true Intel modules are required. Seems like a clusterf.....

I will never build a windows box with amd on it though ..

I really hope the iMac Pro with Xeon 8 cores, 64GB ECC ram, 2TB PCIe SSD, and Vega 64 GPU won't cost over $6.5k or I'm going to be switching to Windows this winter. I can't wait for who knows when the new Mac Pro will release and I desperately need a machine that will last me a minimum of 4 years before upgrading and the iMac Pro offers everything I want and need.

Oy, someone mentioned Capture One Pro? Lol. It drives me up a wall sometimes with its sluggishness - even on a 12 core machine.

Yeah, I saw the Linus tech video. Most of it went over my head other than the fact that Intel is in panic mode.
