Is it Apple's or Google's? Google now offers bicycle routes for maps, and yet that has not made it onto the iPhone now. Should I hold my breath, or is this another one of those things that we just 'don't need right now' per the powers that be?

Exactly. The same goes with YouTube. Google rolls out better web versions faster than Apple can keep up with the apps. It makes sense, though.
To be honest, I find the web versions of these sites work great on iPhone. Try saving maps.google.com as a shortcut on your iDevice, same with YouTube (if you use it).
Luckily for me, the default maps app does everything I need it to do. As I just use it to look up locations quick.
the Youtube web app works great, but i find the maps app to provide a bit more functionality than the web version..especially when using it for directions (you can view directions plus the map all at once, vs. the web app which forces you to go back and forth between one or the other).
