My guess is that Apple wants to have extra days to put together more shipments from China to be available at 9/25. Who knows, it may be part of the reason why there's so much stock even a couple of days after the pre-order started.

That was my first thought too, that Apple was trying to curve the "out of stock nobody can get one" narrative of the last couple launches.

I'm simply on a hunch, but I'm willing to believe Apple moved its preorder slot to Friday/Saturday to see if more people would be willing to stay up and preorder on a weekend, end of work week, rather than right in the middle of it. Then again, Apple fanatics care not when it takes place. They'll make it out in droves.

well it sure made it easier on me! we went shopping Friday night (that way I wasn't sitting around stressing about the preorder coming up!) got home and had a bit of time to read on here... then it was time to preorder!

on work nights I have to go to bed.... get back up just before midnight... then I have a hard time falling back asleep (last phone and watch because I was pissed I missed release day deliver even though I ordered MINUTES into each preorder... but I digress!)

ya.... i'm hoping ALL future preorders are as easy as this one and are on Friday night/Saturday!

Yeah I was thinking the same thing as well, more inventory on launch day.

ya.... even though bad publicity is still publicity.... they really heard it with the last couple of launches (and especially the watch!)

I guess they could have delayed the start of pre-orders another week, but the end result would still be the same release date and more of a pre-order rush.

Apple was asked directly about this and declined comment. That's kinda like taking the Fifth.

Evidence from a French carrier that the original date was 9/11.

Well here in the USA, that's proof that originally, they were going on sale on November 9th.

We also still refuse to go on the metric system so....

seems to me that Apple wanted more phones shipped on launch day instead of have the shipping dates slip by one week two hours after pre-ordered started. IMHO

It's likely that they forecasted higher demand for the Plus this time around, and with the production issues news hitting today, they knew they needed a little more room to push out phones on launch day.

That said, who cares? We've all waited at least a year for these models to come out...what's an additional week?

What would really be awesome is if the extra week has more phone being shipped/delivered before Sept 25th :)

Having MORE TOTAL phones on launch day seems to make sense why there is a two week gap. But remember, they would have still been making iPhones in China 24/7 regardless of when preorders went live, so the TOTAL number of phones wouldn't be affected. Example, if Apple's China factories can produce 1,000,000 units a week, two weeks between preorders and delivery isn't going to make this number magically 2,000,000 units a week.

It would seem it's more about seeing what models specifically have the highest demand, including which carrier has the highest demand, and balancing the production to help make sure there is a balanced supply for everyone selling the phones.

I'm curious as to why the software update is launching on a Wednesday and not the typical Tuesday and why preorders were on Saturday instead of the usual Friday.

The only thing for why I see why it was 12th of September launch is Friday was the 11th .... 9/11

To be honest I liked the Saturday morning launch. Friday was always a bit of a pain for me with work etc
