I'm looking to buy the X tomorrow, and I currently have Sprint. Since there is no unlocked model, I have to select Sprint, but when I say I'm going to be paying full price it adds on a $30 upgrade fee. Is there any way to avoid this? Seems like total BS.

I believe all carriers have it in some way shape or form. It's their moneymaker.

I got mine refunded with Verizon... but I've also been with them 19 years.

I guess I don't see what it has to do with Sprint though, I'm buying it direct from Apple. Guess my only hope is Sprint can refund it to me.

VZ is having a promotion where they are waiving the fee if you order through VZ app.

Even though I am buying it outright I am sure ATT will also add an activation fee as well. After I get my first bill, I usually try to get out of it by calling them.

Now that you guys mention it, I did this with Verizon last year and they waived it when I said I bought it directly through Apple. Guess I can hope Sprint does the same.

If I pay for it in full through Apple, does it come unlocked? Or do I still have to get Sprint to unlock it?

You just have to give the talk that you are a loyal customer, blah blah and I've usually been able to waive it. For ATT, I wait for the bill to come in so that they can subtract it. Try the iPhone 8 in the app and see if you can get an unlocked version. I think if you select a carrier it is locked.
