I’d prefer them to be on the back, but everyone is different. They probably just flipped a coin. Also, I can’t remember seeing a laptop with the optical on the left.

my old g1S has the optical drive on the left, and i think 4 USB ports on the back lol.

This is why:

Apple really doesn't like sneaking leads and wires across components to other sides of the board.

Notice they only did it once

So you justify their design choice based on ....their design..

Sorry, that is not the reason why as they could have chosen a multiple of viable options during the design phase

I think the fact that the MacBook Pro has all of its ports on the left is one of its best features. It keeps the cables from interfering with both the optical drive (inserting and ejecting CDs and DVDs) and your mouse.

I used a DELL once, which had some of its USBs and its only FireWire port on the right side towards the front. It was really annoying to have to place your right arm either above or below your FireWire cable when using a mouse.

Someone said that the ports should be on the right because most people are right handed. I disagree. The ports should be on the left because most people are right handed and therefore use their mouse on the right.

To the OP: If your mouse cord is not long enough, get a new mouse.

basic answer. Because the super drive is n the right along with the hard drive so it takes up too much space. This is why all the I/O is on the left.

Because Apple has a Magic Mouse, thus needing no USB port. Why would you ever use a non-Apple mouse, anyways?

Non-Apple mice tend to have cables longer than an Apple Store queue on iPad launch day, so it's no problem wrapping that cable around the back of the machine. That's what I do, and it ends up leaving the right side of the laptop free to actually move the mouse around, which is kind of the point to having a mouse in the first place. So as a right-handed cabled-mouse user myself, I really don't get the problem. Actually I prefer it to my previous MBP which had one on each side.

I love laptops that have everything on the rear. It makes everything look so much cleaner when you are setup @ your desk. It's why I still have a Dell D630.

I do too.... right until I want to use the laptop in my lap instead of as a desktop.

It is a pain in the ass to have connections sticking off the back because you are more or less forced to keep your computer in a very standard way to use it.

Whereas now I'm sitting in a position I could not sit in if my power cord or usb ports were straight out the back.

this. I guess after they decided for internal design reasons to put all the ports on one side, the left side choice became the only option.

It's probably a design choice based on internal stuff.

It doesn't bother me at all. I consider it an improvement over ones that did bother me, especially when they are located right next to the headphone jack or on the right side where I use my (wireless) mouse. And, I am glad there are only two. Any more than that (in my opinion) is unnecessary.

I know why the usb ports are on the left side. Its called "the curse of individuality and market differentiation". The layout chosen goes against good evolutionary design, they should be on both sides. Imagine a car with four doors, all at the back left passanger side, that's about as rediculous as this is, This is the path chosen by Apple post Microsoft bailout mid 90s. That's the answer: Apple places emphasis on aesthetics, not functionality and usability. Apple does not do usability studies, they just "do things"...this big company can't even get usb port layout right...hahahahahahaha!

Nice to see a two-year-old thread revived!
